Land Rover Brand

Just to clear any confusion Land Rover's woes really headlined after they were taken over by BMW not when they were part of the Rover Group. Then, the V8 engines Rover used for about thirty years were actually GM Oldsmobile derivatives built under licence by Rover who got their first unit of Karl Kiefaifer of Mercrury Marine who was experimenting with it for their range. Bomb proof reliable and could be tweeked to get 400hp!! (from an engine that you could stand over and lift) although typically only 165hp. But in essence, if it's and old Land Rover it'll be reliable (for an old car) but BMW's various attempts to update it just seemed to make hopelessly unreliable. :smt089

I've got an LR3 now and had a Disco. The LR3 has had few issues (less than my wife's Lexus RX350) the Disco had many. Another thing to be aware is that the Disco is really short on power. Make that really short.

The one thing I love about both models is how square they are. I just got back from camping and I'm always surprised how well the form factor works to pack stuff in vs. the overall size.

Having had a disco, I'd stay away.

Good luck

Don't know what's in the Navigator but the Lincon Town car has a Jaguar engine under the bonnet (whithout the 32valve top end)....

SCOTT,
If this is going to be your third vehicle, buy what you want. You don't other people to approved it. Reliability should not be a factor, if it break down you have two other vehicles to choose from. If you like it, that all that matter.

Personally I loath the look of the Rover, Navigator, Lincoln, Landcruiser, Hummer, Jagura, Mecedez.
I have a tacoma and I love the way it look, not the best and I don't care what anyone else think about it.

Not a lot of help when your valuable spare time is being wasted away sitting at the side of the road waiting for a tow truck and hoping the weather next weekend will still be as good as the one you've had ruined.

:smt038 I have a HONDA CRV EX 2008 tango red with less then 6,000. miles I am asking $23,000.. 4 wheel drive....

Even though I actually like the brand and we had Rovers before in our family, I would stay away from the Disco for several reasons. First repairs are very expensive and you'll have lots of 'em, especially electrics and electronics. Second the Disco is a DOG performance wise and very, very thirsty. I mean performance worse than a Chevy Cavalier and the fuel mileage of a Ford V10 pickup and I am not kidding!!

Nice tidbit: http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/jalopnik/2009/06/Range_Rover_HSE_Lemon.jpg

Are you confusing Ford's "Modular 4.6L V8" with the DEW platform's Jag-derived 3.9/4.0L V8? (from the Thunderbird, Lincoln LS and Jag S)

Actually it's a 4.6 modular which is the same motor as the Crown Vic. The 4.6 has a few different versions - the 32 valve used in the older Cobras, the 3 valve used in the current Mustang. The Town Car only has the base 2 valve 4.6 - the only full size platform which got the 32 valve was the Mercury Marauder built in 03/04.

To add to and clear some things up. The big problem was the wiring harness when they changed to the BMW engine from the original Land Rover design. They tried to simply add an engine to the existing system and it caused reliability issues.

Once Jaguar acquired Land Rover, they completely redesigned all the electricals to mate with the Jaguar AJV8 4.0 ltr. engine. This engine is bomb-proof and is rated as one of the highest quality V8's on the market.

And....if anyone is using Consumer Reports as your bible on autos, you are getting a very limited/narrow opinion as they are widely known to have a clear bias for Japanese vehicles. If you want to look at consumer ratings, look to JD Power or Edmunds.

Don't forget the 93-98 Lincoln Mark VIII

The Jaguar engine is built entirely in-house and has no relation to the Ford V8. Yes, when owned by Ford, I can assure you there were some best practices shared, but they are entirely different engines.

The Lincoln LS received a smaller bore version of the Jaguar AJ engine, which is a nice engine. They got an older version, not the current AJ-34(S). The Thunderbird also had this engine as it shared the same DEW98 platform. Don't think any other Ford, Lincoln, Mercury got that engine.

While on that engine, can't wait to try the new AJ-133. The AJ engines were and are still available on some Land Rover models. I know the supercharged ones are AJ based. All of the 2009 Land Rovers with the 5.0 engine are either AJ-133 or AJ-133s engines.

Here, here! That new 5.0 is supposed to be quite nice.

Yeah ... this is one of those "bomb proof" Jag powered post-2006 Range Rovers http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/jalopnik/2009/06/Range_Rover_HSE_Lemon.jpg

More bomb than bomb proof I guess ... Even the latest LR3 still range at the bottom of the reliability scale in any consumer research ...:smt101

Maybe so. However, the "bomb proof" comment was made about the aluminum block AJ V8 engine. Not sure what the issues/problems are with the vehicle you are showing, but I have seen a similar yahoo driving around with crap like that on their Toyota.

I currently know two folks that have Range Rovers. LR3 and one is a Sport. No issues what so ever.

I have had the following Land Rover vehicles:

2002 Range Rover HSE
2005 Range Rover HSE
2008 Range Rover HSE
2005 LR3
2006 Range Rover Sport HSE

I have had zero reliability issues. I have never been stranded on the side of a road. My cars always start... even when it hit -27F this past winter. I have not experienced any electrical problems either.

My parents are Lexus fans. They have had multiple issues with their RXs.

That said, The old Disco is an ergonomic nightmare.
