Lake Erie VERY Angry - November photos…

I do love when a photographer gets into his work. Almost looks like he is near a sea wall by the reaction of the waves.

Color of that water is nothing short of nasty, is that sh!t brown ?

Were you bathing in in Lake Erie lately? That would explain the color and the recent smell

Sorry cant help it!

We had 25 footers trash the marina next to us when Sandy rolled through - The lake gets nuts....

Very nice pictures! Scary looking water. Hard to believe that is a "Lake" although Lake Erie does have weather, and a lot of fetch. I have never seen anything like that develop in San Francisco Bay. What we refer to as "Outside", or the 'Pacific Ocean', however, does provide some big wave opportunities locally. We have the famed "Potato Patch" and the San Francisco Bar which have both taken ships, and seen waves of legendary proportions. Less than 30 Nautical Miles from "The Gate" we have the famous Mavericks surfing competition with 60 foot plus breakers happening on a regular basis about 1/4 mile off-Shore. Sill, that is some brown angry water. Would not catch me out in that on purpose.

The waves are probably substantial but is the cameraman's perspective that makes them look so huge. Can someone back there (maybe the OP) share what size they were? I am guessing 4 or 5 feet plus lots of wind. Not a day I would be out there but I doubt the 15 to 20 feet they look like.

Lake Erie is a relatively shallow lake and churns up a lot of mud when the water is moving hard. Take a look at my sig pic on a nice calm day.

My experience with the lake tells me there is some rebounding action with the water and the photographer is fairly close to shore where there is a sudden depth change. So, there are gale winds, lots of waves, dim grey November sky, and rebounding water to enhance his pictures.

I respect the lake. A lifetime of experience has shown she is a heartless b!tch and won't hesitate to claim lives.

My stepfather spent many years on ore boats on the great lakes and the one that always left him in awe (and that he made sure he impressed upon me) was how how fast Erie can go from flat calm to 10 footers.

As for the wave size, I concur with Pete that monster looks like rebound with a wind blown top. The actual waves in the background look like 3 to 5's or 4 to 6's ????
The author mentions 8 metre (meter) height - 28ft?????

He definitely captured some rebounds: "During his full-immersion photo sessions, the waves generated by wind were three metres high. But when they rebounded off the Port Stanley pier or were multiplied by an undertow near shore, some grew into eight-metre-high monsters."

Pretty awesome every which way you view them!

Confused Seas! Got caught in that on Superior in my little Sea Ray....not fun.....

Excellent photos!

It always amazed me how much weather the Great Lakes get.

Here is an old photo on board a T2 oil tanker in 1985 coming in to SF bay. It doesn’t look like much, but the wind and waves were pretty crazy. A barge sunk the same morning near the GG bridge, so we had to wait outside the entrance for ½ day bobbing around like corks. We were finally escorted in (long line of ships) by a CG escort. Great experiences, but glad I am not part of that world anymore.

Very cool picture of the tanker. Looks like the upper deck is wet? Sea looks like at least an 8 on the Beaufort scale. Probably was really something once you were coming across the bar. I have taken photo's of pretty extreme weather, that really do no look like much until you start to notice the details (Like a puddle on the upper deck, or the foam blowing across the water). That is one of the awesome things about the lake Erie photographs. They captured the weather very nicely!

Iagree, probably an 8. Pictures often do it justice. I was a snipe in the ERback in those days, so I would often run top side to catch the sights whenpossible.

Anythingabove Pt. Conception is heavy water. We have it easy down here in So Calcompared to you No Cal guys who venture outside the GG.

Thebiggest water I ever saw was north of Guatemala, in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, which is notorious for high winds. I wish I had a camera or a Gopro back theninstead of the $10 instamatic camera. It’s in the memory bank though.

Looks like a dog's face with long wet fur.
