We hear alot of complaining about poor service in the boating world. I'm not immune to complaining either. However, if I'm going to complain I also have to commend a company when they promptly and professionally respond to a complaint. I had posted elsewhere about my issues with MAN diesel engine service, particularly obtaining a replacement motor mount. I had previously been told by PDI (The MAN distributor in the Southeast US) that my part would take over a month to obtain, as apparently they couldn't fine the CAD drawings. Upon posting my concern, Brent from PDI called me this Thursday and apologized for their lack of timely response. He assured me they would get on it immediately, and that their commitment to service is foremost to them. Well, he honored what he said and by noon yesterday (Friday) I had my new motor mount. The mount is not a standard part, but custom made for each unique application. Suffice it to say, PDI and Brent went out of their way to satisfy a customer and for that I am grateful and can recommend them without reservation.

Morning Steve,

As a Sea Ray guy I am always asked about product reliability and who is the best in this or that. I have opinions on a whole array of things that I have seen on our boats and other manufacture’s boats but I also recognize that I fall far short in being knowledgeable on many components. From small gas engines right on through the 1100hp V-10 in the 610 Sundancer, I can talk unqualified all day long.

What I am an expert on (self titled) is how many of our suppliers/vendors respond to issues that do arise. I too have been stranded, or with issue so far out my radar sweep wasn’t even seeing land. And each and every time my question had the word MAN in it, I was on the phone with these guys and solutions were at hand. You named Brent so I will not be held guilty for mentioning him. I feel reluctant to say other names but just like my company, the juice flows down from the top and with little search time, you will find the name Malcolm Philips synonymous with PDI. MAN engines do not enjoy having qualified tech’s all over place like a hundred year old American motor may, but the Ace in the hole when concern about representation comes up, is those boys at PDI….and has been for the past many years I have been at SR. Strong motors and even stronger Team.

Good story Steve and if you do not mind, I would like to forward your writings to Malcolm, Brent and the rest of the group at Performance Diesel Incorporated. I will be standing in front of Malcolm this coming weekend and I will show him this post.

Thanks,

Capt. Rusty Higgins
