Looking to buy a kayak to use on my 28' SD. Can you tell me what make and model you use? Thanks,

Glenn

For the local rivers in Central Kentucky we use an Old Town Dirigo 120 and Old Town Rush. Do not take them on any power boats, none big enough. The 120 is 12 feet long about 49 lbs, real nice to paddle. The rush is about 9.6 feet long 30 something lbs. May want to get something like perception swifty or Otter Sport if you want a small all around rec boat. Both are light and around 9.6 feet long.

We take an Ocean Kayak sit on top to the beach. You get wet in a sit on top but real small and light. We have the Ocean Kayak Yak Board.

Good Luck.

I use an inflatable kayak. This one is made by Sevlor and set up for diving w/ places to strap your tanks etc. The Czechs make the best inflatables if you have a mind to spend a lot on an inflatable.

We became fans of Wilderness System Pungos. I have the 120 and my wife has the 100. It has the most comfortable seat of the kayaks we tested. We have gone on 4 hour runs with nothing falling asleep:smt038.

Sue bought the small Swifty. It fits nicely on the swim platform, then when we anchor, it gets launched and tied up alongside the waverunner.

I was going to say, the Wilderness Pungo's in 10 or 12' lengths are very popular around here(I've been checking for one or 2 myself.). Also, the Old towns. LLBean has the Pungo and Manatees in 10/12' length's that are popular. These are mostly open water/flat-water kayaks. Whitewater and ocean kayaks are whole different lists that I'm not familiar with.

Check out Craigslist for deals on used ones, many of these are almost indestructible with some of the new plastics they're using for them.

I have used numerious times on my 340DA as well as on my 400DB (until we purchased a PWC) the Old Towne Touring 160 (seats 2). Very similiar to the Twin Otter (http://www.oldtowncanoe.com/kayaks/tandem/twin_otter.html) Like it for many reasons: Could fit on bow of 340 (angle) as well as on the swim platform. Easier on the 400DB with the TNT lift. Had plenty of open space to store things while paddeling around as well as shutteling 2 Goldens to shore. Kids were very safe and comforable inside. Served as a great kayak for a family of 4 with 2 dogs.

Thanks for the replies. I was out this weekend and looked at the Dirigo 106 and the Old Town Vapor 10XT. Going back out tonight and with the info you supplied, will have a kayak in the back of my car.

Thanks,

Glenn

Has anyone towed a kayak behind their boat? I would like to paddle around whiled anchored, and I am looking at 14-16' kayaks. Our boat is only ~11' wide.

I have an Ocean Kayak (11' scrambler)... I think Ocean is the best kayak made... I have towed behind the boat, but most of the time it sits on the bow... It is not heavy, only about 25-30 lbs. You can't sink it. It is very fast and the kids love it... Ocean mades an Malabu XL which can hold two adults and dog... We have had three kids and a dog on our Scramber. We have a dingy but the kids like the kayak much more...

We have a Wilderness Perception that is a 2.5 person kayak. We use it all the time. It fits on the trailer just under the boat and goes everywhere with us. It's 15 feet long and a little cumbersome at times, but I think it's easier than dealing with two kayaks. We just tow it behind if we're going slow or we'll hoist it up across the back if we're going fast. Our boat is only 11 feet wide so it can't sit on the swim platform.

My wife and I have Wilderness Systems Pamlico 100's. Like the Pungo mentioned above, they have a very comfortable seat, and the kayak is a good all around model. This website has user reviews that were helpful to us when we purchased ours. www.paddling.net

The kayak selection should be determined by what you want to do with it. I have a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120 that is a sit on top type and is set up for fishing. This is a great little boat that I have had in 2’-3’ chop in the bay and did not need to worry about it sinking or filling with water as it is a self bailing type – but you do get wet, which is part of the fun.

For sight seeing and light touring I have a Necky Manitou 14 with a drop down skeg that makes steering almost as responsive as the rudder type kayaks. What ever you select, I would strongly suggest that you do not skimp and buy an entry level cheap paddle. A good composite paddle can cost about $300 but is worth the cost because of how it will improve the efficiency of your stroke and feel almost effortless compared to a $50 paddle.

Helpful hint: do not trust the water tight bags to take your cell phone along, I speak from experience here.

I have two Hobie Maui ocean kayaks that I would love to sell. 1 or 2 person, locking dry areas for storage. Paddles, PFDs, Dry bags, Thule bars for transporting. Used one year while camping. If interested, drop me a PM.
