June 11th 2011 - Newport/Block Island Area Ideas

Any takers to rendevouz with us? Wetpaint claims the mudslides are great at Champlains. I'll be bringing my signature Margarita's.

Looks like it will be Block Island. I had been looking at Greenport on LI, but there is an in water boat show that weekend, so I doubt slips will be available. I'm going to confirm Greenport is out first. Here are the 2 plans, flexible if others want to join in and add a twist to it all.

Plan A:
Friday June 10th, arrive at Block Island
Saturday June 11th, head over to Greenport

Plan B:
Spend Friday and Saturday nights at Block Island

We're in - I'll probably pick up a mooring or anchor near the beach in block - Likewise for greenport - probably Coecills(sp) on Shelter Island or a mooring in greenport. I will probably show up after 5 friday or first thing sat morning as the kids will still be in school

BTW - the mudslides are no joke

Block Island sounds great. Any room for a newbie?
This is our first year on a cruiser and we are looking forward to exploring the islands by sea.

I just got off the phone with Greenport's Mitchell Park Marina. The boat show is Friday and Saturday, but they will have some room for transients. So I am going with Plan A unless someone feels strongly otherwise. That's Friday night at Champlin's on Block and Saturday night at Mitchell Park in Greenport.

If we can get a commitment from Captains and a boat count, I'd be happy to request a block of slips for us all. You'd each have to confirm your own reservations, but at least we could be guaranteed slips. If we have enough takers, we may be able to get a group discount, but it is still "off season" anyway.

I am going to start tracking the boat count in the OP of this thread at the top. I will need your boat name and LOA. So far I have:
Ididntdoit - Friday at Block. Saturday at Greenport ????
Boat Name???
LOA 32'???
Monte Cristo at Block. Saturday at Greenport???
Boat Name????
LOA 28'
Others chime in....

I scheduled a guys weekend last year and with my neck I could not go so I promised that weekend to the guys.....I go there a lot, I know, but it is tough going further when you only have a weekend.......I need to talk to my boss about getting more time this summer.....

Yeah, I hear ya, work gets in the way of fun. But you could just do what I do, throw it on a trailer and tow to a boat ramp closer to the destination ;)

ya i hear ya, getting a crane every weekend to take the bridge off and trailoring it with a wide load police detail might be too tough and costly each weekend......I am a single guy, maybe I will just hang out with you and your family for the summer.......

So what are you saying...your boat will be the dingy...I don't think I can find davits that will fit, but you're welcome to hang out anytime.

I'm going to call the marinas on Friday to setup the reservations. So far I only have 2 slips needed, and 1 mooring for both legs. Any other takers?

I've booked my slips. See the OP at the top for details and links. Book now!!! See you there...

We just splashed in this past weekend... other than hick-up with GPS it turned out to be a nice cruise.

I towed her up from Virginia to our "home port" last monday and the guys at the marina broke my jack on the trailer, don't answere their phones......we couldn't launch this weekend.. The girl at the office is useless.....Another weekend not cruising! Argggg.. I'm towing her out next weekend. There goes another week of our very short cruising cruising season. Arrgggg... Even the wife wasn't upset the way we got treated. I had this trip booked 2 months in advance and clients coming with us for a weekend cruise. Not cool!

Final preparations underway. Looking like it could be OK weatherwise, short of a passing thunderstorm. Everyone set?

Heading out today...weather will be good today, but Sat and Sun legs could be a bit bouncy with 4-6' seas projected Sunday afternoon.
