June 11th 2011 - Newport/Block Island Area Ideas

I had a great time. Monte Cristo and I cruised from Fall River, out the Narragansett and onto BI Friday night. The cruise over was a little bouncy, but not too bad. From Newport to Point Judith was the worst, you get some confused seas in there.

We were out and about Friday night, hit up Captain Nicks for some drinks and music, mud slides were in order.

Saturday I headed out for Greenport and Monte Cristo headed back to home port. It was a hairy trip, once we got out of the lee of BI, the seas were a mess. It was a 4-6 foot following sea off the port quarter, but occasionaly very confused. More like a washing machine on agitate :smt119 . However, we did safely complete the trip in 2 hours, somehow managing 24 knots, as keeping on plane was better than in the hole.

We pulled into Greenport and the deluge let lose. Thunderstorms and downpours all night long. Had a great dinner at Claudio's, but not much going on in downtown on a rainy night.

Sunday morning we shoved off around 9:30am after the thunderstorms passed through. Figured we'd follow them across BI Sound before another batch brewed to the west. We took the scenic route back, heading northeast skirting the coast. From the North fork we passed by Plum Island, Gull Island, Little Gull Island, Fisher Island, and then Watch Hill Point. From their we headed up to Point Judith and in. Took 3-1/2 hours from Greenport to Newport. While we hit some big rollers, the period was such that it was quite enjoyable and smooth overall. Just a few bumpy spots as we passed by the breaks between islands. In all I logged 155 nautical miles and burned 130 gals of fuel.

Had some lunch in Newport before heading back to home port.

Nice - sorry I missed it - where did you tie up in Newport?
At the town wharf. It's an attended wharf, $.50 / ft / hr. Ouch! Had lunch at the Candy Store Restaurant

BI looked empty from pictures
Champlin's was empty, but BI downtown was busy. Ferry passengers I presume. The BI sailboat race was underway Saturday circumnavigating the island. We took a bike ride out to Mohegan Bluffs. Had a great ride around the island. I want to get back and explore it some more.
