I thought it was a rumor that the Jones Beach Tower was being taken down, but it really is happening.

That has been a landmark icon to me all my life. They are putting a rose garden in it's place.

Going to be hard to see the rose garden heading back in from the Canyon!

It was my understanding it was being rebuilt. Where did you see that it was being removed?

WOW I drive past that almost every day How sad i thought they were repairing it. Like you it has been there all my life

I would think it they were taking it down they would just blast it down and pick up the pieces. Not know the area and never been there I don't know if this is possible but from the pic it looks like a restore to me.

The tower is being repaired because of years of deterioration. The project sarted summer of 2008. It is a 3.2 milliuon dollar renovation.

Pointless to repair it especially for 3.2 million dollars or even 2.3 million. Just put a $1000 dollar flag pole there and put the moneys into some needed dredging around that area.

The tower is being torn down. The engineering company that did the original survey missed alot water damage. They state it would cost 10 million dollars to repair so there taking it down. So I guess they will spend 10 million to take it down brick by brick. Also its a landmark building but since its on TOWN property i guess they can do as they please. Its a disgrace !

I did not see this with my own eyes but here are two pictures showing the before and after. THis is really sad.

There was a email rumor going around, which mentioned what Rob said that it was on town property ,and the NYS Dept of Public Works was taking it down.NYS does not have a DPW.The Tower is owned by NYS (see State Seal on tower) and is on NYS property and is being rebuilt.I believe the top had to come off to access the steel beams inside which are encapsulated in brick.I'm also betting the State wants the copper tank inside for scrap as the tower is no longer used for water storage.

BTW Thanks Rob for the use of your slip again this year!
