I've had Cummins QSC 500's and QSM-11's and now MAN 900's. Each of them have their own issues. On the QSC it was the serpentine belt, which was prone to failure. So, I changed them every two years and carried spares. On the QSM it was the exhaust manifold issue (which I didn't become aware of until the survey was done when I sold it, where one of my gaskets needed to be replaced. BTW same engine surveyor as Joe used and found both of his leaking. He is Cummins certified not a Cummins Tech directly, which may make a difference on parts accessibility, don't really know). If I still owned that boat I'd inspect the manifold joint at the end of every season, a leak is usually readily apparent, if you're looking for it. I always found parts availability and cost for the Cummins engine to be both good and reasonably priced. Service was readily available. This is my first season with the MANs but I already know parts prices are significantly higher than Cummins and require ordering ahead of need. There are 3 MAN certified service companies within 50 miles of me but I hear that is rare, other than Southeast Florida. My friends with big Volvos tell me they have similar experiences with parts as I do with the MANs. I feel for Tim and his issue, it sucks to miss a big part of a season for something like this, but I wouldn't condemn a whole engine model or manufacturer for it in my choice of engine on a future boat. I'd buy a Cummins QSM-11 again, I thought they were great engines in the mid horsepower range.
