I've had it with Cummins

I've had Cummins QSC 500's and QSM-11's and now MAN 900's. Each of them have their own issues. On the QSC it was the serpentine belt, which was prone to failure. So, I changed them every two years and carried spares. On the QSM it was the exhaust manifold issue (which I didn't become aware of until the survey was done when I sold it, where one of my gaskets needed to be replaced. BTW same engine surveyor as Joe used and found both of his leaking. He is Cummins certified not a Cummins Tech directly, which may make a difference on parts accessibility, don't really know). If I still owned that boat I'd inspect the manifold joint at the end of every season, a leak is usually readily apparent, if you're looking for it. I always found parts availability and cost for the Cummins engine to be both good and reasonably priced. Service was readily available. This is my first season with the MANs but I already know parts prices are significantly higher than Cummins and require ordering ahead of need. There are 3 MAN certified service companies within 50 miles of me but I hear that is rare, other than Southeast Florida. My friends with big Volvos tell me they have similar experiences with parts as I do with the MANs. I feel for Tim and his issue, it sucks to miss a big part of a season for something like this, but I wouldn't condemn a whole engine model or manufacturer for it in my choice of engine on a future boat. I'd buy a Cummins QSM-11 again, I thought they were great engines in the mid horsepower range.

I get the bar and screws on the forearm but what is the T-shaped thing at the elbow?

And I now have some high-quality metal installed from my "480 DB Injury"

Thanks. So it looks like it's a DIY repair with the right tools and some one handed dexterity? Kind of like an impeller replacement on a v-drive gasser.

(edit: If anyone is squeamish, do NOT click on the YouTube link)

This should answer your questions:

Agreed, I am sure we could get this done in the shop out back.

Bmac stop worrying about MAN parts that you don't need being too expensive , cummins guys have to worry about parts ..... I don't worry about parts at all MAN 700s so just sit down and enjoy your boat and your MAN engines ok??? I do !!!

I don't know, but looking at Gary's repair, it seems clear they cheap-shotted it. I see no evidence of sealant on those screws, and that plate really should have been thru-bolted.

Hey Tim,

Curious if you are back in the water yet? If so how did the repairs go?

Jack-
We are back and running (finally) after literally 40 days and 40 nights. Honestly, this is partially because I took a very proactive stance (i.e. I was an over bearing pain in the ass) in sourcing the parts. With the assistance of a good friend here, well placed within an organization that happens to buy a lot of Cummins engines (who might that be?), I was able to find someone at Cummins who actually cared, and he was able to do a ridiculous amount of leg work to chase down the final six parts from all over God's green earth, including a phantom shipment that went out, but didn't, and then turned up in Minnesota.

Gary-
Maybe you need to start a thread called "I've had it with the Mayo Clinic".

Congratulations, Tim! Happy you're back on the water.

And a very good deed done, Captain WellPlacedWithinAnOrganizationThatHappensToBuyALotOfCumminsEngines!

Nope; well, unless the repair tech is a 150 kilo gorilla.....
