Guys -

I have an '04 320DA which has a Clarion XMD3. I asked my dealer to hook up a 3.5' audio cable to the aux inputs. So..the result is as follows:

1. The ipod plays fine in the cabin. I don't even have to switch anything on the radio, as soon as I plug in the ipod (via the audio jack) it somehow senses that there is something connected. The audio volume is controlled 100% by the wheel on the ipod. Changing the volume on the radio does zero.

2. The ipod won't play in the arch speakers. In fact, whatever the XMD3 is set to (FM, for example) plays in the arch speakers. If I set to AUX, nothing comes out (even though it is playing in the cabin). Really kind of works like a 2-zone setup.

The dealer claims they think the radio is bad and needs to be replaced - I'm skeptical, and think somehow something is wired wrong..

Thoughts??

I just hooked up my mp3 connection on my 04 340 myself. I pulled the radio out and located the auxillary input, connected the rca ( red & white ) wires to it, drilled a 3/4 inch hole in the top panel above the radio, but below the light to mount the jack. Plugged up ipod and wallah, it works. If you're pretty handy, the radio is very easy to come out. Just pop the ends off on each side of the radio and unscrew the 4 screws that hold the radio in place and slide it out easily. There are 3 sets of rca connections coming out of the radio. If I remember correctly the shortest of the 3 pairs of rca's is the auxillary input. As far as your speaker problem, do you have the rocker switch on for the "Cockpit" speakers to play? If you want to give me a call and I can walk you thru it, Just let me know, Bruce

I have a '04 260DA, same Clarion unit, same setup (iPod plugged into AUX), same result: iPod plays only in cabin, not through speakers in cockpit (all other modes work normally). Fooled around with it when I first installed it, could not correct it and just assumed it to be weird logic in the Clarion unit.

Bruce - I really appreciate the offer. I took a look at doing this myself..but when i started to pull out the radio, it seems that the various wires hooked on the back prevented me from pulling it out more than 4-5 inches.. So rather than pull harder and cause an issue, I just got the Marinemax service to look at it. Also, the cockpit radio light is on (plays music up there on FM/AM and CD - just not thru the AUX).

Kimo - wierd that you and I have the same exact issue. I searched and didn't see anyone else mention this? So I figured it is a problem (plus MM says it must be a bad radio, even though it works fine doing everything else). What do you do..just play the IPOD music loud out of the cabin..??

is there an amp on this system? did they hook the ipod directly to the amp?

There is an amp, I'm pretty sure. They didn't connect to the amp, but the back of the Clarion.

There is an amp, which I think powers the arch speakers. However; as suggested - the IPOD is connected to the Clarion AUX in cable.

Guys, I am using an XMD3 head unit and the aux input RCA's and hear volume in the cockpit and salon and the volume controls work. On some systems I have seen, Sea Ray has the Salon speakers using the speaker outputs of the head unit and the cockpit speakers on the amp. Have you looked at the fader settings on the head unit? I also have to make sure the subwoofer settings (pg 11 of manual) are set to "rear" (which isn't even listed as an option) instead of any of the low pass filter settings(LPF). I don't see how that is tied to the Aux input, but my system works.

Just a thought, there is a big difference between a "headphone style aux input" and an Ipod input. The cables I am using came with an adapter for an Ipod. Are you using the right cable?

Did you guys ever get this figured out? Having this exact same problem today. aux only plays down in the cabin and NOT in the arch speakers. Even if I have it set to FM and have the iphone 3.5mm plugged in I will get FM up in the arch speakers and ipod in the cabin at the same time.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Justin
