Ipad, etc... Gizmos?

Yes, i've had both go into emergency mode, but only when the screen is directly facing the sun.

When I first got my ipad, I sat in the park to do a little surfing on a hot sunny day. 5 min later

I have a mount for my iPhone and I need to keep it covered most of the time or it will overheat. I keep it covered with a baseball cap when it's too sunny but I think this is the biggest argument against using these devices for primary navigation. My Lowrance never gets too hot and shuts down.

Where mine is mounted at the helm, it doesn't get direct sunlight.

The charts and tides program for my iphone from active captain came in handy when in Charleston last time. In addition to depths, notes, and charts it has the tides and current for different locations and this really helped when planning for putting the 260 back on the trailer. Wappoo creek can be tough with its fast current but we timed the peak tide and slackest current using the Charts and Tides software. Pretty sure I had to pay for this software but worth it.

Charts & Tides is "OK" for charting, but pretty basic. Where it shines is that it has ActiveCaptain data on the chart. That is the only reason I have it, and it's GREAT. Navionics is supposed to come out with their own UGC (user generated content) layer for their charts sometime this year. It'll take them awhile to get the kind of info ActiveCaptain has built up. If you're a cruiser, activecaptain is a great tool to have.

On a related note, here's a new Charting app for iOS - http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/simple-charts/id451093694?mt=8. I haven't tried it but I know one of the gals involved with this app -- not personally, professionally from my own app.

Also, there will be a great cruising app coming out in the near future that will give Active Captain a run for the money. I'm not involved directly and I can't say anything publicly but it should be a great app with excellent info and charts for cruising. My problem with UGC is that it's opinion based and I may not agree with Billy Bob's recommendation. I think of Gary's pictures and experience in AC that he posted here a few months ago -- someone else may be OK with sub-standard accommodations and give that place high ratings. This new app will be different.
