I've made a deposit on a 2008 Sundancer 38 pending a sea trial and the admirals plus capitans and 1st mate approval. I'm just the bildge boy in this family; work to make the money to pay for the boat and everything else, load the boat, drive the boat then clean the boat and fix anything that breaks!!. At least I'm on the boat which is what it's all about, and it beats yard work!!

Anyway, any ideas of what my boat insurance will cost here in CLearwater? Any good insurance companies?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Purely a guess but I'd say somewhere around $1500 to $2000.

not sure about clearwater, but we just insured our 320 here in arkansas. i shopped for prices and the best ones we came up with was BoatUS and Travelers. Both these quotes were under $1000, the Hartford gave a us a quote for like $3008, i thought they were a bit high! shop around before you buy.

I'm going to guess $2000+ We pay $1000 a year for our 240 sundeck

You are in Florida. You have to get your own quotes. Ignore comments from anyone (like me) who isn't in Florida.

Also, you probably want a valid and realistic Hurricane Plan.

My insurance is with progressive and I am in Miami. I pay 2400. That was the cheapest I could get for my 07 240DA and I keep it dry stacked.

Pass the joint, man. My 340 was $3500 last year. This year it's about 2600 with Progressive. I live in the Panhandle.

progressive wouldn't cover me down here in Fort Lauderdale for a boat over $100,000.00. Same with Allstate. Boat US was way out of wack. I asked MM who they recommend and that agency was the lowest at around $3500.00.

Good luck!!

Same with Progressive last year, but this year they accepted me.

I think the IRS should give us Florida boaters a tax break for insurance. It's getting ridiculous.

Barry,

I've got a 2001 420AC at Cozy Cove Marina just South of Ft Lauderdale and would like to know whom MM sent you to as I am currently with BoatUS and am bleeding badly.

My '01 380 DA was insured through Travelers sitting in Stuart for $1700. It was going to be left down there for a few months but we changed our plans and brought it up early.

Holy Cow!!! $14,000.I looked for quotes all over and they were all quoting me around $4k for my 280. MM referred me to a brokerage McGriff,Seibels & Williams, they are out of Alabama and they got me coverage at about $2k. Their phone number is 1-800-768-2121
I wish you luck, but yeah, that bill is way out of control.

You're talking my business...this is what I do. Well, insurance in general but I do a fair amount of boat insurance as well. Some info about this in deciding your purchase: First and foremost...coverage. It varies greatly from company to company. Be sure the agent knows your navigational territory. Many will not cover you in International Waters, or even in the ocean at all unless they are clear on the fact that you use the boat somewhere other than inland lakes. How will they value your boat if it is damaged/destroyed? There are 2 types of policies, "Actual Cash Value", which means they will pay you based on market value (depreciated value) for a similar style boat, or "Agreed Value" (better!) which means you and the insurer decide on a value up front as to what they will pay you if your boat is totalled. Most insurers do not cover your canvas for damage during a hurricane. Don't know what you can do about that but it's a good question to ask your agent to be prepared. Many will not insure your boat in the event of any named storm. Real problem counties, Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade, plus a couple others down there I can't think of. Do you pull water skiiers? Be sure to get Watersports Liability coverage. You can sometimes get discounts for things like fire extinguishers, completion of boater education courses, memberships in certain boating associations, and sometimes, if you can get your homeowmers company to write the boat coverage, you can get a multi-policy discount. I know Travelers and MetLife do this in Alabama. I insure a 35 Carver in Orange Beach Alabama, total value $150,000, for a cost of around $2,000. Orange Beach area can be as bad as Florida. I wirte that one through a company called American Modern Home. You can ask your agent about them if they are in your area. My main problem with this Carver was location, value, and age (over 5 years is a problem with some companies). The main key...buy from an agent you know that knows about the area where your boat is located. In Alabama I have all kinds of options but once someone calls me with a boat in another state I have to do my homework to make sure they are covered properly. Long answer but good info you need. You don't want surprises at claim time!

My Dash...I use McGriff, Seibels as a broker. They have a program called Seahorse Underwriters. Great coverage. Main limitations are the counties I mentioned above are a no go, they will not provide windstorm coverage on any boat over 5 years old, or over $100 k in value. Good homework on your part thought! They are a good outfit. Correction, now windstorm coverage for boats over 5 years, or $100k in FL...don't know what they do in other states.
