What do you use to get the impeller into the housing, I was told to use dish soap, but not dawn. Someone else implied regular body soap like ivory, but I have zest. :smt021 What about an oil or grease?

What can I use that will not break down the neoprene and not become tacky, as it will be a couple of days before I can put it back in the boat. :smt024

The last time I changed it on my generator, I had nothing onboard to use. We did however have olive oil and it worked fine. Typically I keep a small tube of petroleum jelly onboard just for this though. SB

This site below is great resource. Especially for beginners like me. This specific page deals with the your water pump and simply says to "grease" the impeller & the housing.

I'll bet by mid day tomorrow guys on this site will tell you EXACTLY which product to use, where you can buy it, how much it cost & someone will even chime in telling you to use Head & Shoulders shampoo!

Thats a nice resource, thanks. I know what you mean about this site, thats why I hang around.

C'mon Newbie, is that the only reason? LOL But doesnt the petro jelly break down rubber? Dang I'm trying to keep it clean.

Late night and I'm up talking about PJ with another guy :wow:

I couldn't tell ya if it breaks it down or not but I don't imagine so. If its ok for skin, probably good for the rubber:smt043 I've always run it right away though. Seriously though, any kind of grease, oil etc should do. A little dab of motor oil will work.

I'm going to bed now. SB

The mechanics at our dealership use a tiny amount of the silicone lube that comes in a tube. They just lightly coat the inside of the pump body.

dish soap for me. makes cool suds when you first start up. make sure you pay attn to the rotation mark on the housing and as you rotate the impeller on insertion, rotate it in the direction of engine rotation to get the vanes bent correctly. i guess it'd straighten out if it went in backwards but not sure.

KY jelly would have been funnier. i know impellers are not latex rubber, but i'd sooner keep a water soluable lubricant on board for the various rubber & plastic components (i'd like to go on record as saying that i DO NOT have any lubricants on board other than dish soap).

petroleum products have some solvent properties, which is why they are NOT recommended for lubrication with , um, other, uh, latex applications.

liquid soap is great for slipping hoses back on and driving screws in. silicon spray is great for zippers and snaps.

I guess you wouldn't want the warming kind since we're talking about the cooling system....

What about the lube they sell at the pool store, works great on my pool I bet it would work just as good on the boat. Comes in convient size tubes as well.

Well I decided to go with Liquid Wrench Silicone Spray. Only because with what was on the shelf it seemed most logical. I also bought some LW Liquid White Lithium Spray. Does anyone know of any other applications for this stuff?

I dont know; it was on the shelf right next to what I needed so I picked it up. Now Im trying to find a use for it. I guess Im just doing my part to keep the economy going.
