First post. Found a thread that the run from Cheboygan to the Mac is too tough for a 21 footer. I am under contract for a Seville Mid Cabin and have seen small boats pounding waves when I have crossed the Bridge, but it is doable, right?

Wifer and I will be up in Indian River for about a month so I can work around weather. Thoughts and opinions are very welcome.

It should be easily done if you watch the weather and don't push your luck. Have a chart of the area and a vhf radio and go for it. It's not like your going to get lost up there unless you hit fog.

I went for Burt lake state park to Mackinac island. I was a bit windy. Do It. Lot of fun

From the PO, charts are important. He ran the Seville around the Apostile(sic) islands without a GPS. Being new to boats that can run larger water, I have found in research, the shelfs around Bois Blanc can come up quick.

Charts don't run on a battery. Nor for that fact does a compass. Keep it simple and aware is the best path to follow. Seamanship.

Should be a fun trip. Weather is the key. In Michigan there is a harbor of refuge no more than 50 miles apart so you are within 25 miles of one. Just duck in if weather changes.
Yes charts and a compass that is accurate. GPS very helpful but charts and a compass never fail.

I have a 21' Mid cabin Seville and it does handle 3 footers OK but any bigger tosses you around alot - Great boat but pay attention to the weather. What engine do you have? When I am in bigger waves (for me) I obvously go pretty slow but id does fine.

Lots of locals with smaller boats make the run regularly. You will be just fine. If you have a month than you may want to make sure you visit the Les Cheneaux Islands via Hessel. It is only another 12 miles beyond Mac Island. You would not regret that run. Have fun! Oh Yeh, GPS and Charts are your best friends up there.

We Made the trip from Burt Lake to the Bridge 4 yrs ago in a 21 foot 4 winns.
If you hit the weather right the trip is a Blast.
We had 4 to 5 footers on Lake huron around the Bridge.
The boat will handle it if you know how to take them.
Swimming under the Bridge is alot of fun.
Docking at the Island for lunch is also Quite enjoyable.
Be careful and Cautious and you will be fine

Just got back with the Seville Mid-Cabin. It was a 1200 mile round trip from outside SW Michigan to just outside of St. Paul MN. and finally to Houghton Lake MI. The trip was uneventful but really long. She needs a new starter a resevoir tank for the trim oil. Since the 4.3 will need to be lifted to replace the starter, I am going to have the sludge at the bottom of the oil pan cleaned and the oil pump replaced. Other than that I will need to rewire the trailer lights and give her a good wash and wax.

I am one happy guy.

GREAT looking boat - Although i might be a little biased. :D How much fuel did you go through? What was your average speed?

Ok. Fill the tank from SW Michigan then make the drive to pick her up;

@ 370mi it was 22 gal @ 3.94per
@ 671mi it was 22 gal @ 3.89per
@ 905mi it was 22 gal @ 3.99per

I didn't add the final entry until I fill again and allow for a 10 gal fill to make it back at 10pm. Yep, alot of money but I have a boat I have been looking for that is in the shape I wanted.

In my opinion, the boats I have looked at in Michigan are in tough shape so I looked further. I also didn't want anything from the South. This girl has great gel coat.

alwhite00,

Any insight or advice will be greatly appreciated on the Mid-Cabin. You are about the only person I have found that owns one and that looks good. I have seen so many boats with not just fade, but dings all the way to the glass mat.

I made the run from Mackinaw City to the Island in a 10' Glen-L design that I built when I worked on the Island is the early '70's. Obviously, the trip occurred in ideal conditions but was done never-the-less. Shouldn't be much of an issue in your Seville. If you do venture to Mac Island, be advised that there is major wake action within the harbor from the ferry boats. Your boat will be in constant motion within the slip. Ample lines and fenders will need to be deployed to keep your boat secure. The new state Straits Marina in Mackinaw City is a real nice facility with floating docks. The municipal marina is more convenient to the downtown scene and shares it's basin with Shepler's ferry.

Just use some commen sense , watch the weather, etc. we made the trip from Cheboygan to Mackinaw Island with friends in our 16' Boston Whalers with no problem. Great trip, very fun.

I am just around the corner from Summer. Need to search on the forum for cleaning the head liner. I think it is only its hope and pride holding it together. I had the steam cleaner ready...wait. This will fall off.

If you figure out how to clean it. Let me know!!!

Wife has some ideas on cleaning it. Found a big problem though- cracked block. Found it when replacing the starter. I knew the glass was good, got her for a price, and had a couple of grand for just this kind of thing. Still, $105 per hour for service!

All good and I am not making a monthly payment.
