I boat in salt water and I leave my boat in a slip. What methods are you guys using to flush your engines?

SAshton,

Could you add a signature block with your boat information (year, model, engine size, inboards, I/O's, etc.). Also, add where your boat is located so that you can get more specific help from others in your area. All this will help with answering your questions and future posts.

Thanks,
Harold

I have a built-in flush kit by Perko. Just hook it up to a garden hose for about 5mins after a run, and it flushes the salt out of the engine. Then just make sure your outdrive has anti-fouling paint, and do the regular maintenance on it.

It's pretty brackish around here, and when we were shopping around, I saw several outdrives that were handled like this, and they all looked fine.

BTW, Thanks SAshton for adding your boat info.

Your 7.4 is probably rated at around 300 hp. She probably flies along pretty well. The 7.4, as well as the 5.7 are solid as a rock. Is the 98 Carbureted? I had a 310DA with twin 5.7's and BIII's that were carbureted and she would cruise at 28 knots (32 mph) and topped out at 35 knots. I had some rebuilt carbs put on her and she went to a 30-knot cruise and topped out at 38 knots. It seems that she just needed some more air. Of course, the more air she got, the more fuel she used. It was fun back then, but at $3.?? a gallon now it's probably not the same thrill.

I like the quick flush valve system but 182.00. I like how you can back flush the outdrive. Anywhere have it cheaper?

On that Perko Flush Pro unit, do you need a Seacock to stop the flow of Sea Water while using it or is there something built into the unit that will do that? Many boats with outdrives (including mine) do not come with Seacocks on the hose comming from the outdrive.

anyone have a photo on which hose is the correct intake hose that I would install one of those units?

I hear the perko has a built in valve that stops the flow from the drive but it is weak and water passes through it.

I have the Perko FlushPro on my MAG 350 MPI with B3. The unit is inline in the red hose coming from the outdrive to the water pump in the engine. Remember this unit does not work with non B3 outdrives.

There is a check valve in the unit that keeps the flow normal when operating the boat, and keeps the sea water out when flushing.

I've had mine for 6 months now and I'm very pleased with it.

SAshton and Dave S,

Sorry, The Perko Flush Pro is for inboards. You are both correct. The $182 thing-o-magic looks like the most viable solution. I have inboards and use a set of Thoroflush valves (they are now out of business). You can also get the winterizing strainer/emergency bilge pump kit to leave on the valve (god forbid) if you ever need to use the engine to pump out the bilge.

Anyway, if you price the bronze parts out separately, you will see that the $182 isn't that bad. A good quality ball valve is $40 each x3 = $120 just for the valves, add in a tee, a couple of barbed hose adapters and a 3/4" garden hose adapter and you will be near that price point anyway. Just think of it the way that I do; "it's just 2 boat units". Example: When my wife asks how much it costs at the fuel dock today, I just say "6 boat units for 190 gallons". The only problem is, she wants to translate those units into checkbook/accounting units :(.

THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Finally someone with an answer for the Bravo III, The Perko unit only flushes the engine but your valve there looks like it flushes the outdrive as well. My boat is on a lift and I've been looking for a way to flush not only the engine but the outdrive as well.

Finally an answer. Now if I can find someone to show me how to put it all in, I think maybe even make sure there is a way to run the saltaway (or whatever it's called) through the engine and outdrive while on lift to make sure it's clean after every trip out. :smt038

I'm so excited now.

I have a 98 7.4L MPI w/bravo 3. What size hose do I have? Is it 1 1/4? Anyone have a photo of one installed on an engine like mine so I do it correctly? I thinbk its the hose the goes to the transom and attaches to the raw water impeller housing. They are think hosed and very stiff.

I contacted the YachtsOfStuff.com and they say for my 5.0 MPI w/BIII I would need the Model #125IOV (1 1/4") and also get Item #111SH the universal strainer so that I can use a salt preventative when I flush. 224.99 with S&H they are telling me sounds easy to install I assume I put it in the hose from the water pickup to the input of the impeller so that the impeller sucks water from the water hose connected to it.

I think your correct. anyone flush with the ears? i'm sure its a pain to reach but I have heard of boaters doing it that way.

I've heard some people put a ladder in the water I saw another guy near me had this big floating square block he through in the water where he could float under and put the muffs on. But I'm liking the look of that Quick Flush System.

My mechanic uses muffs when the boat is out of the water.

BTW: I thought one boat unit = $1000 USD.

B.O.A.T. ---> Break Out Another Thou'

I went to the boat today and my intake hose is really low and a little tough to get to. I'm afraid to cut it as its very stiff and wrapped with a protective layer. Also its a pain to get to the valve if I do install it. I might try the muffs on the drive in the water and see how that goes. Worst case is there are TONS of boats that don't flush there engines in the water. I have a trailer so I could take it out periodically and flush engine with salt away. (better than nothing)
