I'm just sick

I met with the Marina owner today, and what you said in the first part of your response is virtually identical to what he said. He said he wants to put it on the water so that it's under a load, and see the results. Doesn't make much sense to me, but at this point I don't think I have much to lose so we'll be doing that tomorrow.

Your advice is extremely sound regarding the oil analysis. This one is going to bite me in the ass, but at this point, I really have no recourse - as any potential evidence is long gone. Great advise, and I know I'll never purchase anything like this again until an oil analysis has been accomplished.

I sincerely appreciate everyone's response. Like a swing and a miss on any of lifes curve balls, we'll step right back up to the plate. It will be fixed and we'll move on. While the money end of it is gonna bruise the wallet, the hardest part was telling the kids and seeing their faces. But, like we do with everything as parents - this too is being used as a myriad of lessons to help teach our kids......and ourselves. Never again will I be so foolish as to not have an oil analysis.

Thanks guys.....

Well Said Family!! Keep your head to the sky.

Wishful thinking here probably but... is it possible the B3 drive on that side was too high and it was just the driveshaft knocking?

Hang in there and wait for their report.

The sound of the knock should indicate if it is upper, (tappets, rockers) little end(piston gudgeon pin), or big end(con rod to crankshaft), removing the spark from each cylinder one at a time, should indicate which cylinder has the issue quickly.

The fact that it is not blowing smoke at least gives some indication that hopefully, rings, compression is good.

They should be able to diagnose fairly quickly and then at least gives you some direction, which will hopefully give you direction and less heartburn.

To add to Franks comments. Many years ago I took on a job as a mechanic for a construction company that had never employed a mechanic or set up a service regime. They bought a tractor in that the had a road broom set up on. The oil bath air filter was so clogged all I could do was throw it out and fit a Donaldson air filter. The oil was like grease, I ended up flushing it with fresh oil several times. After I finished it. They took it out and bought it back 5 hours later, blowing clouds of blue smoke, oil running out of every orifice. The glue that was previously in it was holding it together

Here's the bottom line....investigate the incident! Either no oil or not winterized is my guess. My friend just fired his boat up and had water running everywhere!!!! Cracked block and heads and oil pan full of water!!!! Marina did not winterize it and he paid the invoice for that and shrink wrap and storage!! Marina is putting a brand new engine in his old boat under their insurance. They did not do his water or sanitation system either but his invoice does not state it was paid. He assumed they would do it all!!!! New boater and I'm sure his water system and toilet are trash also. We had a very cold winter here. I would push it a bit with the marina and find out why the other engine did not smoke at start up. No reason to pay $$$$ blindly if it's someone's fault. That's why they have insurance, Mike.

when you hear someone say rod knock , they mean connecting rod (crank to piston) not push rod to valve train

I have the exact same boat. And had the exact same problem. Except that my engines ran fine for the first few years of owning it.

I had about 550 hours on the original engines and I started hearing a knock in the port engine. Then it failed to run reliably at all.

The problem was a blown valve seat that got into the cylinder and destoryed the piston and cylinder wall while it was rattling around in there.

Replaced Port Engine with Reman Jasper. Noticed Starboard had a long thin crack in the blolcok once the Port was pulled. Decided to go ahead and start fresh with both new Reman engines. About 12K all in.

This may be a common problem as my Son in Laws Mercruiser had the exact same problem..blown Valve seat. Could happen to any engine at anytime, but you can see from my experience, this maybe a Merc quality issue.

Just confirm what the actual problem is before replacing parts. Many times parts are replaced and the issue is something else. Prove the issue before spending any more money.
