Hello,

I have a 400 DB and just noticed that the trailing edge on one of my props is slightly bent from having struck something. It is only about an inch in length and out of alignment by less than a 1/4 inch. It looks like a carefully placed jig and gentle pressure with a clamp would correct the problem.

Before I consider this any further, any thoughts out there? I'd hate to crack or damage the prop. It this an easy self help project or one for the pros?

You should get the props to someone who has the skills to recondition them properly. It is unlikely that you could do it yourself and get it right. The curves all need to be be proper for the props not to vibrate.

I agree with Mr. Salt. Should pull the prop and send it off for reconditioning. Even if it's not vibrating, it'll be creating excess cavitation.

On my 300 I had a similar problem and I bent it back myself... It did not experiance any problems, but I did sell the boat a couple months later... I guess it is a matter of cost vs risk... Its your boat...:smt017

Definately have a qualified prop shop do the re-con. I can tell you that there are no "clamps" at these shops to fix the TE ding you have. The pitch angle will need to be checked and verified to spec,Rake could have been compromised, and several other aspects of the propeller geometry. Ask yourself, Can you perform all these evaluations with certantity ?

and if you do fix it yourself you will always be saying to yourself, is that a vibration I feel because the prop wasn't properly repaired?

I had my props scanned and when I put them back on the boat I was amazed at how much vibration it actually had that I did not even know was there. Now I have a baseline and can determine when something is wrong pretty quickly.

You can take them both off underwater and get them to a propscan (or the like) facility and have them repaired and tuned.

OOPS!!!! I saw your avatar and assumed you were in FL or the like! I just saw your homeport is close to my old stomping grounds. You are probably on the hard. Use a propknocker to get them off and follow the directions above.

Nice boat BTW.
