I must be getting too darned old

Just when I thought I’d seen just about everything in my near-70 years on this planet, and just when I thought that nothing would surprise me any more, I have come to realize that I’m wrong. Now it’s not all that hard to admit that I’m wrong—I get plenty of practice at that, so bear with me.

I was perusing the pages of the June, 2016 issue of Yachting magazine I came across something that took my breath away. Not because it’s such a beautiful piece of art or a beautiful boat (though it costs more than many boats). It’s a frickin razor. Yup, a razor made by a company called Zafirro and it’s made out of Iridium and it costs….are you sitting down? $100,000

But you’d better get you order in soon because they’re only going to make 99 of them. Here’s where to order it: http://www.zafirro.com/zafirro-iridium.php

But that’s not the only reason I feel I’m getting old. Boats don’t look like boats any more. They look like some millennium designer’s idea of what a penthouse apartment should look like. Or something that Captain Nemo would have enjoyed skippering. Check out this “beauty”….

C’mon Man. If this is what the future of boating looks like I’m glad I’m going to be with Neptune before they become widely used.

And look at boat interiors. Boat interiors are supposed to look like, well, boat interiors. Not like some city apartment in one of those cheap high rise buildings you see in the big cities. Even my favorite builder, Sea Ray, has gone away from building boats with boat interiors. They build interiors that look like…wow, I don’t even know how to describe them any more. Words like cold, harsh, uninviting all come to mind, but I bet that’s not how Sea Ray describes them.

And to buy SR’s new L650Fly model, you don’t just go to your local SR dealer. You work through a Sea Ray Concierge. Dang, and I thought a concierge was the guy in the monkey suit standing behind the small counter at an upscale hotel.

I subscribe to a half dozen or so boating mags. Most of them deal in what I call ‘real’ boats. But 3 or 4 of them deal in boats that only those people who Robin Leach (remember “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” show?) would interview. These mags advertise wrist watches that sell for as much as many of us paid for our home. And leather bags that sell for as much as a car. And fashion items where you could easily drop several boat bucks just to look nice at your yachting party.

So I guess I am just getting too old to enjoy the new stuff and the stuff I could never bring myself to buy even if I could afford them.

Now don’t get me wrong. Getting old has its pro’s and con’s. The con part is when I’m trying to squeeze this tired ol’ body behind one of the engines to work on it. That seems to get more and more difficult every year. But there are also some real good things about getting old. It beats the hell out of the alternative, which is death and the last time I looked that was pretty darn permanent.

Being an old boater also has its benefits. My 50+ years of boating has given me a LOT of experiences I can call upon to help me do things like handle emergencies when they come up, or back the boat into the slip when the wind is blowing 25kts from the worst possible direction. My years of experience has taught me not to panic but to take my time and do it right, whether that takes a couple of ‘missed approaches’ where you pull back out and reposition the boat to make that near perfect landing.

What say you? Is it me? Or is it this new up and coming generation of boaters who have to have the biggest and fastest and loudest and shiniest of everything?

I'm in the old camp and I am in my forties. People waste money to show off and new boats are going the wrong way. I bought an older boat and I where clothes that make me look like I live in the bilge. Maybe I'm just another Warren Buffett. Amen GFC

I hear ya Mike....but..... I get Yachting mag and P&MY. I love looking at all that stuff I can never afford (I'm 51).

I just find it interesting. I like most all of the new designs but I have always had an artsy side (played rock guitar in bands for years).

But I will say, some of the early Sea Rays are like a '78 Corvette......ain't never going out of style.

This is perfect timing, I just came from our marina where one of the guys told me to come to his dock to check out his new neighbors boat. It's a 1997 500 Sundancer, a couple boats down is a basically brand new 450 Sundancer. If I had my choice, I'd go with the 97. It looks like a boat that I wouldn't be afraid to do boat things on, yet that brand new 450 I'd be afraid to sneeze at.

Also, that 500 is a monster. I'm jealous

We've had this discussion before and I'm still with you. I like boats with pointy fronts and flat back-ends....the way they're supposed to be. I'm 66, retired (as of today as a matter of fact) and like things as they were....in some cases. I'm down with technology, most of it, I like some of the new music, well actually very little of it but thank Gawd there are a lot of Classic Rock stations, and lastly, there are more of us than them. I guess I'm Classic, as you are Mike and in my view, not a bad place to be.

A fellow dock mate of ours rolled in a few days ago with a brand new Sundancer 400. WTF planet did this thing just drop in from? As I can afford to stroke a cheque for one of these any day of the week, it is certainly not a case of jealousey. I'm just an ole fashioned boater stuck on the timeless classic lines.

I went to the razor site to place my order (yeah right!!)

Here's the shipping options -

Free Shipping $0.00
FedEx 2 - day $25.00
FedEx OVN - $55.00
Personal Delivery $1,500.00

You got to be kidding me. For $100k + $1,500, somebody better be there every day to shave me, and clean that razor, too!!

Oh, and the only payment methods they accept are wire transfer, check or American Express. I guess I can't get the miles on my MasterCard! That's it, I'm not ordering it.

Prior to buying our 480, MarineMax was trying to get us to but the newer boats. Instead I saved $500k and bought an awesome 1999 480 sedan bridge. I like the older lines and interiors so much more.

I will concede that it's an ugly boat but I wouldn't say it's the millennials who are ruining everything. Boats in general are a reflection of the owner's personality but the big ones are a reflection of the owners personality and their ability to show off their ef-you money. Look at Steve Jobs' yacht for example...

Every vehicle I have is at least 30 years old, including my boat, I like the older style!

I am going to respectfully disagree with most in this thread. I think the boat in the original post beautiful. The bar area inside looks a little too girly to me but the fact of the matter is that the guy that had it built loves it. He spent his money on things that he wanted & I'll bet he hopes nobody builds one that looks too much like it.

Custom yachts like these are in a class by themselves but when we come back towards the real world, Sea Rays for example, It is difficult for me to call another mans pride & joy "ugly" or any of the other words used in recent threads on this topic. Some guys take their wives to the movie theater & spend $50 to eat popcorn & watch 2 hours of whatever. I'd gladly pay twice that for a 1 hour walk through of that yacht.

So thats my 2 cents. Kick me off the island if you wish, I'll wave goodbye from the stern of that thing as I fade into the sunset.

+1... totally agree. I think it's ugly on the outside but it's someone else's dream. The inside amazing.
