Down at the marina last evening and noticed a SR 280 DA going in circles nearing the fuel dock. Thinking there was some problem, I stood by, ready to help out if I could. As the boat got closer, I asked if everything was ok and a worried looking lady at the stern holding a dock line said "yes, we're trying to come in for gas" The captain was struggling mightly with the helm, shifting in and out of gear making sickeninig thunks as his overreved engine slammed into an unwilling transmission. I managed to grab his lines and get the boat under control. The captain seemed totally oblivious to the damage he was doing to his new boat. He then needed help with the self service gas pump but decided to fill only one tank; "they're both connected aren't they?' When I said no he replied " it does't matter, we're not going out for long". He was then met by his son and their family who loaded enough gear (beer) for a small cruise ship and proceeded to cast off. He turned the wheel hard over, slammed the boat in gear and wedged his swim platform hard into the dock producing numerous cracks in the fiberglass. I couldn't watch anymore as he waved and headed out to sea. I don't know if I'm more angry at his stupidity at taking out passengers and putting their lives at risk or watching him abuse a perfectly good boat.

Take pictures... That's what I do. Ask Skip!

Like the following picture I took heading up to Spring Cove at Solomon's Island. I had to slam my boat in reverse and stop as this guy decided to cut out of the channel via my port side. I missed the memo on the new rules of the road I guess.... so after I stopped, I took pictures. He waved to me as he went by totally clueless...

A perfect example of why you get a survey on a fairly new boat. This guy will own the boat for 2 maybe 3 years, never do ANY maintainance and then trade it in (or borker the boat to get out of boating). Before it goes up for sale, a $500 detail job and another $400-$500 in fiberglass work, will make it shine like new.

I even have a picture of this guy from a week ago trying to crunch his boat in his slip all the while he was screaming at his wife:

You should see the ones I have of other people that, well..., completely missed their slip.

The more I boat the more I realize it just comes with the territory. I get upset just walking down my dock looking at all the neglected expensive boats sitting there thinking "why can't people treat their boats better?" and "why do they even own them if they don't want to take care of them?"

But in the end, if folks like the guy with the 280DA you helped doesn't really care about his boat, then why should we care? So nowadays I try to ignore these things as much as possible (it's very difficult sometimes) but at the same time I keep a diligent eye open out on the water when I am around people like that because the last thing I want to happen is have their stupidity endanger me or my family.

Dave,
Your post is entirely too profound for this board!!!

CSR will only work if we keep bashing each other and posting big boat vs small boat issues!!! Don't get me started on the rich vs poor thing.... :smt018

I guess the other thing you can do is call the harbor police or whoever patrols your area if you think something is really not safe. I'm not a big fan of people doing that except in extreme circumstances though.

Where I live, I have had neighbors call the police on me (911) for watering my lawn the wrong day of the week and had the police show up and enter my property and walk around the ouside of my house checking for water usage (I am on 10 acres so that's not like just pulling up to the curb). So... people that call the authorities for "anything" somewhat irratate me. I found out about the "search" after the fact and made a stink about it but the fact people think "illegal lawn watering" means you should dial 911 is obscene. Things are slow in Williamsburg.

You have to learn somehow. Over here due west of Dr. Pill, when you buy a new Searay you get some training from a captain. It really helped me break a few bad habits my Dad taught me.

When I first got the new boat I decided to practice docking on a slow afternoon at a public dock. A couple of kids 9 or 10 years old were fishing on the other side. As I tried different approaches time after time, one the kids got frustrated with my inabilties. First he asked if he should grab a line. Then he started telling me which way to turn the wheel. Finally I tied up to take a Coke break. He comes over and tells me you really need some lessons. It shouldn't take seven passes to land at this dock. I tell him that I was practing and he gives me the look.

OWNERS!?!? You guys actually own your trailers?!? WOW, you guys must be loaded....

Nah...I scammed FEMA claiming my house was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina....They gave me my nice DW....Guess I should be thanking you all......Tax $$$$ and all that..

You guys have trailers? :wow:

I live in a tent and have to use the bathroom on my Sea Ray for showering and other necessities. I thought I had it pretty good until I start hearing about trailers. Boy you guys must have a lot of money. :smt100

Boy oh Boy, you guys should be happy you can go inside your boat. Have you ever tried getting into a sky locker on a 200BR to take a nap? Talk about a tight fit. Sheesh

Glad to see everyone is happy its Friday!!

Yet some people can stand there and watch someone get the snot beat out of them and not call the police. The heads which sit on some shoulders makes me sick.

As for you neighbor. I would have gone and bought more hoses, walked to their front door, ring the door bell, and when they answer, let them have a taste of that bootleg h2o.

The only thing worse than the neighbor calling 911 for that,is the fact that the lovely officers, instead of "protecting and serving" ,were using this as an oportunity to legally cruise your 10 acres. I am sure there were MUCH better things they could be doing.
