Hi Gang,
My stern tilt stopped working for the up movement. Trailer up and stern down are still working. Any ideas?

This is usually caused by one of the trim position sensors going bad (located on either side of the outdrive at the pivot point). They have contacts inside that slide along coils of wire which eventually break. I'm guessing your trim gauge is also not working now. Down and trailer will always work even if both sensors are bad.
Our boat has actually had this same problem.

Repair is rather involved to do it properly, requiring removal of the outdrive and gimbal housing, as the wire travels through a seal in the transom assembly. I have seen a few boats with wires spliced outside but that will not last long sitting underwater.

Best of Luck -Eh !!!

Yeah, it is a pain to replace the trim sensors but I actually did it to our 1979 Mercruiser 260 outdrive last summer without pulling the drive. I ordered a kit that came with both sensors & seal for ours & if you move the outdrive all the way in either direction you can actually get to the seal & where the wires go through. I takes a LOT of patience, some creative use of hand tools (long screwdrivers, etc) & the wife holding the flashlight & pushing wires through to the other side while you retrieve them, but it can be done correctly. Just make sure you've got that seal in right & a little silicone on it & you'll be up & going again! However if you do pull the drive it would be a good time to get chance to look everything over & do some preventative mainenance while you're in there. Good Luck!
