Hurth ZF 63, 2.5:1 - Maintenance

Back to this transmission...there are two hash marks on the dipstick, but no labels/words. I guess one signifies the cold level, the higher one is the hot level (?).

If memory serves me correctly,

Nope.

That is min and max hot fill. You have to make you own cold fill mark with a dentist's drill or something after you do the "check transmission fluid within 1 minute after running the engine" hot level check. Remind me to pull out the manul next time I am on the boat and I'll check for you. (that would be tomorrow)

I think Dr. P purposely blurred the pic, so we can't tell if it is rust or not. Very sophisticated, for a dentist.

I'll be inspecting this bilge next month, so I can report back to everyone on its condition. Don't worry, I'll be objective.....mostly.

Ok

Here is the "book" version.

When checking the fluid level, rest the dipstick on top of the housing hole. The fluid may be over the max mark because some of the fluid in the cooler and hoses may have drained back.

To accurately check the fluid level, the engine must be operated at 1500 rpm for 2 minutes immediately prior to checking the level. Stop the engine and quickly check the level. If low, add fluid to bring it to the Max mark.

My words:
That said, once you are satisfied that you have the unit fluid at the correct level, put the dipstick in and go home. Next time you are at the boat, take out your dentist drill and mark the dipstick. That is now your cold fill level and you can forget the 1500 rpm for 2 minute deal.

Mine don't have cross hatches. The previous boat did.
Same sig pic for a few weeks now.

I must be thinking of another forum...I like both of them!

LOL! Thanks!

1500 RPM in gear or at the dock?

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa...

Those are two different paragraphs.

When measuring fluid rest the dipstick on the edge.

Do not rest it on the edge and then rev the engine. You'll spend the next 4 or 5 hours cleaning the bilge! Screw the dipstick in place before revving.

I think that would be the equivalent to a teenager "neutral drop" on his car!

Fluid capacity??

Thanks Carter

I don't know either. It says ZF 63 and then 2.5, which I guess is the gear ratio.

It's an IV........

Dale
