Hello,

New owner of a 2011 260 sundancer. As the tropics are heating up, i realize I need a plan for my boat in the event a hurricane threatens the chesapeake bay. My boat is on a lift at podickory point, so pretty exposed. My options are pull the boat there if they have space in boatel, or take somewhere else and have it pulled. I do not have a trailer or access to a trailer. Podickory point is directly on the bay just north of sandypoint and just south of the mouth of the Magothy. I was not there for Isabel but know the parking lot and all the docks were under water.

Any recommendations for marinas that are more protected, or have higher elevations to place hauled boats. I may schedule some service at Marinemax in Joppa were i bought it and see if they will rack it for me.

Not familiar with your marina or location but your best bet is to talk to the other boaters there. They can give you the scop on what has worked (and not).

It is good to be prepared but no need to panic as we usually get plenty of advance notice of real dangerous storms. The problem is it is very difficult to predict what these things will do as they travel north. Many of us at the Joppa marina pulled our boats last year at the threat of the Hurricane that was in late August, only to have the thing turn east at the last minute and not hit us. Even with the last minute rush the crew at Joppa’s MarineMax handled it extremely well with getting everyone that wanted to be pulled out and safe on the hardtop.

Knowing the marina as as well as I do you should not have a problem getting your boat pulled quickly as they can pull it with the forktrucks, and move it to safe storage. I just would not freak out about a Hurricane hundreds of miles away. Kind of like running to the store at the threat of a snow storm.

With Hurricane Isaac now pointing straight at Mobile Bay, I'm down now preparing the condos, and if Sunday it's still coming this way, will have my boat pulled.

Didn't think I was freaking out, just trying to have a plan in place for if/when a storm surge is likely. And since my marina was under water for Isabel, thought it would be a good idea to maybe prearrange with another marina that will be slammed dealing with their own customers when the time comes. Good to hear things were smooth at Joppa marine max, I figured they would likely be accommodating to a loyal and paying customer.

I'm new to boat ownership and am not familiar with the elevations of various area marinas, picked mine because I have a house across the street.

Joppa MarineMax is right behind my house, so I have firsthand knowledge of the place. Isabel was a totally different animal from anything with have seen in a very long time, and even with her the crew at Gunpowder did a fantastic job.

You should call your insurance co. and ask them what percentage they will reimburse you to prepare your boat for an upcoming storm. The most common is 50% but it has to be declared a hurricane. If you pull your boat and put it on blocks to wait out the storm make sure the ground you chose will not become so saturated with rainwater that the blocks shift or sink. That along with high winds can cause a mess. If you have a marina that has indoor racks try to get your name on their waiting list.

I literally just posted to the Club Sea Ray suggestion blog that we need a weather related forum for just these times. When posted in the general discussion they sometimes get lost in the shuffle. All weather related issues would qualify...not just hurricanes.

On the gulf coast we are watching Issac closely. There will be some scrambling going on in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores if it keeps its present course. Last update had it kicked over to the East a bit. Pensacola/Destin/San Destin may now be in the cross hairs. Too soon to know.

Pleasure Cove Marinia

Was there last night and saw them pull and block a 43 foot sailing catermaran like it was a toy.

Love Pleasure Cove Marina, been there many times for just a weekend getaway!

I don’t think they were pulling a boat for a Hurricane though that is in the gulf right now.

Did you see there winter storage building; you can play a football game in there!

You take care of yourself down there. I was thinking about you the other day when I saw the predicted storm path.

Good luck and get to feeling better soon!!! We're crossing our fingers for you, it sounds like its not getting the intensity they originally thought it would.

Not sure how Kreole Kid fared - I got a private message from him a few days ago, but I have been away for a few days until this all settled down. We (SE LA) were definitely in the cross hairs. All has passed and surge waters have receded. My marina has floating docks that worked like a charm. We are supposed to be protected for up to a 12 foot surge. Reports were around 10 feet but nothing verified. Our problem here was the hurricane sat for 36 hours blowing in south wind and raining 12-14 inches. There is speculation that a new levee wall that can be opened and closed was closed too early and did not let water out of Lake Ponchartrain when winds were out of the north. Thus when the wind shifted to the south there was nowhere for the flood waters to go. Imagine that - a government project with unintended results.

There were others not as lucky as me - I feel for them.

The beautiful town where the marina is got hammered with water. 3-4 feet in most some buildings along the river, it was at least a foot higher than Katrina. Oldtimers do not remember water to these levels.
