Hello
I’m new to my 97 400DB and we are very pleased with our new toy.
I have been reading a lot about the balsa core construction that is in my vessel?
Can someone help me with my HIN “SERP3750D797”
What factory is “P” designating ?
The boat is in very good condition but I’m sweating bullets about the balsa core if it is is in my boat?

I dunno about the "P" but there are both pros and cons for coring... think about weight, speed, and fuel consumption. Generally, as long as you know about it and act accordingly (e.g., seal any penetrations well before adding hardware), it shouldn't be a problem.

You can maybe ask Sea Ray for info about your hull layup schedule.

Near as I can tell from ours, our hull sides are cored but our hull bottom is solid.

The "P" is going to tell you where the boat was manufactured. My 97 400 is a "SERF", it was built at the Merritt Island facility in Florida. I found a link, not entirely sure it's accurate, but it suggests SERP would be Sea Ray Palm Coast, Florida.

Curious - why are you sweating bullets now over the idea of coring? You already bought the boat! If you were concerned this is something you should consternate over pre-purchase, not post.

You'll very likely have loads of coring up on deck. Hopefully your surveyor did a thorough check for moisture up there? Below the water line...we should not have any coring.

P= Palm Coast, FL
IIRC, Sea Ray closed that plant a few years ago when they decided to stop making larger boats, put it up for sale, but then Brunswick decided to build Boston Whalers there.
Also IIRC, any Sea Ray that's cored came out of Palm Coast, but not all Palm Coast boats are cored. My boat is a SERP boat and is not cored, but the 400DB's up until 2001's were cored hulls. I don’t know if your boat is cored, I doubt it, but if it is, As stated above, don't worry about it, just be aware of it. Enjoy your new boat.

Edit: must have been too early for me this morning, thought your boat was a DA, Jeez, sorry. Your boat is definitely a cored hull. again, don't sweat it!

Balsa was removed from the layup with hull number 600(*) in model year '99. So I am pretty sure your boat has cored hull sides. But the world isn't coming to an end. Pay attention to any cut in the hull like for bilge vents and remove and rebed them if needed.

Honestly, you have more risk on the deck coring than on your hull. The deck is fully cored wirth balsa.

* The hull number is not part of the 12 digit HIN#. The first 3 digits of the number on the transom below the HIN# is the hull number.
