How to Varnish Teak The Aftica Way!

Good tips Casey...

Now a favor... You have personally seen the teak on Aftica... What was your honest opinion about the final product?

It looked real good!

And I am sure it will look much better when we are on your boat when thunderstorms are not threatening, there is sunlight, the canvas is off and the temperature is above 45*!!!!!

Sounds like our forecast.

Mr. Boyd,

I do again understand what you are saying about the VOC's and this varnish not being a catalized substance. Now that being said, the manufacturer also does not suggest putting tung oil on the parts or cutting the mixture with paint thinner. There are several steps I personally tried and am very pleased with how they came out that Petit does not suggest. I can only attest to what I have done and my end product. Now with all due respect. I did this as my way to varnish and not Petits

Jason,

Good for you, glad you are happy. Sorry, I said anything. I foolishly thought my professional experience designing coating systems for marine structures, as well as my personal experience of making and finishing furniture might be helpful. Clearly, it was a case of "Don't confuse me with the facts."

No Sir,

I value your opinion. Please do not take offense to my post. The only back ground I have is with the technique that I used (right or wrong). I will stand behind the process I used as I know it worked. Now, am I willing to use lighter coats and less varnish. I certainly will and I will gladly report my findings. I do not have enough data on my end to support anything different. I do not wish to lead anyone astray. I find the information on CSR to be mostly top notch. Again, thank you for chiming in and when the oppertunity arrises I will try lighter coats.

If you read the title to his thread you would see he was simply showing his method. Judging by the pictures he has shown and the length of time it has been since he did it, I think he may have found a method that works. There is always more than one way to skin a cat.

I just got finished with a little wood project myself!

Not nearly as involved as what you did but it looks good for a basic job on some pretty beat up 33 year old wood.

Hey Jason looks great. Wonderful post with lots of picks.

I think Mr Boyd was only pointing out what he knows. We all know that "tone" can be sometimes Read wrong in email, and posts!

Like you I think there's tons of great information here on CSR! You're part of that for sure...

Mark

Agreed Mark. And thank you...

Ray. Wow... you did an awesome job on your whaler!

Jason: what a fantastic post, thanks so much for posting this and explaining it all sooo well!!

Jason:

I haven't seen any other post on it, but was that you in I think "Boating" magazine with the explanation of AFTICA? Another Fricking Thing I Can't Afford? Neat name, I always wondered what the name was. How long ago did you submit the transom picture?

That was me... I did it a few months back.... I love my name people seem to get a laugh out of it

Jason...

Take a look at my logo in my signature line. Take a guess...if you don't already know!

Mark

I'm going to guess something with radio?

That's half of it. Actually a dual meaning. You'll notice a $ sign on the left of the logo. AMFM is the obvious radio reference since that's what I do. The $ sign represents the other "hidden" meaning. "All My F#%king Money"!
