How Not to Dock

Boy, a little training would go a long way! I'd volunteer to help them out and I suspect they might learn something too! How hard could it be? Bow thruster, probably diesel screws? I'll bet I could show him how rarely he'd even need the bow thrusters!

I'm pretty sure the Captain learned a lot that day. I confess that the first couple times out, even after reading and coaching from others, my own were some what similar. Nothing like doing it to educate you, you can only learn so much from books and others.

Amen to that!!! He needs to learn to do it without the thruster, then use the thruster when winds or current are bad. Too many of us rely on conveniences that are not necessary and lead to bad habits.

I just get close and throw a kid over the side with a rope. They swim to the dock and tie me off and I pull in. No problems. When going out we reverse the process. Kid shoves me off, falls in the drink, I fish him out and we all go tubing.

Great day on the water.

I like your style...

True, but I'm sorry, one shouldn't begine his boating life in a 44DB yacht. Can you imagine the scenario if he looses control due to the wind or a current and now you have ~30,000LB yacht rushing thru and crashing everything on it's path. :smt009

You got lots of money and you insist on getting larger boat, God bless you. But, please be smart enough to take proper training.

I've been around boats and marinas for over 60 years and I am sure there is a large group of people who should never been allowed to own a boat, of any size !

Saw this pic today:

I hear this was his small boat, the 61 is on order. :smt043 I started, like Alex with a 175... I made a lot a mistakes with that boat, found all the shallow water... But, if I were a Rich Man... I would bang the 44 around like Rodney Dangerfield and write checks to all I offended...

I was about to say that we all have our bad days but by the looks of the stripe at the waterline it appears he's had a few. I had my first bad day last weekend, the wind got a hold of me at the end of a fairway, I had no where to go....bang...sort of stern into the seawall. Will have some minor repair to do this winter. I still sob uncontrollably about it but I think I'll be ok.

We all have to learn sometime. Unfortunately those initial times can be demoralizing and expensive!

Real men don't use bow thrusters. :smt009

Why don't you then just then turn off one of your engines when docking so you save some fuel for another day and see how well you dock your boat then since you only need one engine to power your boat!!!!

I bought a boat with two engines because I wanted two engines. I have a bow thruster and not only know how to use it properly I can use it when I feel it benefits my boat and or my neighbors best.

The best use of a bow or stern thruster is to use it when you'd like to. If someone wants to make fun of someone else's use of technology designed to benefit the user then you might as well throw away your cell phone and computer as you don't really need them as well to enjoy and live life to the fullest.

Oh well I'm sure I pissed on someone else split milk and I really shouldn't cause life is to short anyway.
