I recently purchased a guitar. Something I've wanted to do for decades but never took the time. After 2 weeks I'm wondering if my dream of becoming a rock star is possible.:smt043 I'm finding that my 58 year old fingers won't cooperate. :smt013

I started taking lessons last year at 60. I really enjoy playing although at this point the only person that knows what I am playing is me!! I knowe what you mean about the fingers but I just keep working on it. Chords just do not seem to come naturally and how the hell do you transition to a "B Chord" anyway..?? Carlos Santana, Jonny Lang, and Kenny Wayne Shepard had better watch out....here I come!!

Good luck. I am having a ball!

I played when I was in High School and College. That was 25 years ago. Then stopped for a long time.

I started playing again 3 years ago....and it is my second passion (boating being the first).

It keeps you sane during the long winter months, when you can't be on the boat.

As far as the fingers go......keep on practicing and before you know it your fingers will be doing things and moving in ways you never thought possible.

I played in high school and college in various top 40 and cover bands of the time (we made more noise than music!), but sold all my stuff when it came time to earn a real living. I don't play anymore, but repair and refinish a nice older Gibson, Gretsch, Martin, or Fender when I can find one worth the money. I currently have a '62 ES 345 Gibson that looks like it will be a keeper, and a Gretsch Country Gentleman that may not be fixable.

Ditto...

I played a bit as a teen, dabbled with the bass in early 20's. Am now relearning the guitar with my daughter (probably my son, too). Right now, my daughter plays the viola, and son is learning the piano. What I don't want is to become the Von Trappe family...

Play is the key word there. I "play" but no one listens. Actually it's a way to assure I'll have the house to myself. I can do chords, but never learned to associate the notes with the fretting fingers. I've decided I need to start working on that. I just need a travel guitar or someway to do it while I'm on the road and life would be good. I'd have whole hotels to myself then!! I have an old 60's Gibson that Frank needs to fix!! It has some surface cracks in the finish, probably from lack of humidity from what I've learned from Dave M.

I was a guitar God once. Had to stop because there was just too much music in my life.

Does the guitar hero game on my sons Wii count  If so count me in:thumbsup: SB

only if it causes blisters on your fingers.

I toured in an rock band for a few years mid '80s.Got tired of no money so I got a haircut and started working as a civilian for the State Patrol in '87 ( no kidding ) then became a career firefighter in '92.I put out a solo project CD in 2001 of original songs and had one of the tunes featured on a compliation disc with Peter Frampton, Eric Johnson, and others . Frank, I want to get my hands on that '62 ES. here's a link to some old video of my '80s cover band circa '86....I am the one on the right...white guitar.

I tried to master the bass but my fingers gave up holding down those cables they call strings. I tried the 6 string, that was fruitless...so I focused on the harmonica. I have no idea how those people can play both at once!

Played in younger days in several groups through college years and worked in a music store selling, repairing / restoring guitars and giving lessons. Miss it now and it looks like we have plenty of talent here to put a band together – how about the “CSR Rockers”?

Over the hill 60ish rockers are in style now! Just ask Eric, Keith, Jimmy, Paul and Pete.

Your over the hill rocker comment made me laugh. When I went in the store to purchase my guitar I had a young salesman play a couple for me. I bought a Gretsch archtop. When I made my choice the kid said "cool, your the second old man this week that bought a guitar from me".

Rockers? As in chairs?

yeah it was good times....it was the eighties and I was in my twenties...what more can you say.

I have no idea how to play a guitar, but my son (now 17) started when he was 14. He has become quite good. He'll be graduating this Spring and although I have purchased him 2 guitars (1 electric and 1 Acoustic) of "non-famous" brands, I would love to get him something really nice for his upcoming graduation.
