How do you mount your electronics in your sport boat?

I am glad that I decided on the combo unit that does GPS and included a depth finder. I did not install the sounder yet but after the trip on Saturday the built in sounder isn't very reliable. It was showing - - most of the day. It worked sometimes but when I needed it (pulling into a shallow beach) it was not.... I have a couple weeks to get the Garmin one installed before we go out again.

My factory sounder on my 175 Sport did that as well when I bought the boat. The transducer was just mounted too high on the transom, so it was in an air pocket on plane. Dealer dropped it down an inch or so and it's been rock solid since. I did buy a second sounder on the other side of the drive for my Garmin 441s. The security of two depth readings is wonderful.

Ok ordered a Sternsaver to mount the transducer on (won't be here for a week) and started looking at mounting locations.

In this photo I think just off to the right of the stern drive under the double set of bolts should be out of the way of the water going to the prop. Anyone with a 190 know off hand the waterline location? I also need to figure out the location to drill the hole for the cable. Just under the swim platform would be by choice (if it's above the waterline)

The waterline should be just under the swim platform. I should get another picture of it all mounted with the line and everything

Perfect, thank you. Where did your wire end up going through? I did snap a photo of the waterline with the boat in the water and yes it's just under the swim platform. Did you drill through the swim platform mount?

Thanks for the photos. Did you have any trouble getting it to work correctly? I notice in the Garmin installation guide it talks about doing some turns etc to see if you get a better signal (I have the same DV sounder).

I didn't spend a ton of time looking at the sonar yet. It seems to work just fine, I didnt tune anything. I wont really be fishing on my boat at all, so the sounder is complete overkill for knowing how deep the water is. The boat has the in-hull sounder for temp and depth, but its just on the little smart gauge. I LOVE having my huge 840 on this boat though. Exploring the river, having the distance to marinas, the little trail that it tracks on the screen as I drive around, its great.

I can sit on the rear seats and easily see the screen, because its 8"... HA!

Any tips on drilling a large hole through fiberglass?

Use the correct size drill bit. I tried using a smaller bit than the instructions called for, enlarging the hole to the correct size by rocking the bit, but that took far longer and was much more difficult than if I'd had the correct size. If your drill can't handle a larger diameter bit you'll need to get a reduced-shank bit. If you run the drill in reverse until you're through the gel coat, there's less chance you'll crack the gel coat, too.
