How do you mount your electronics in your sport boat?

Yep you will be able to use it right out of the box.
I really like my 531s. Does great job showing the channel and
gives me good idea of water depths by the shades of color. It will
also leave tracks showing where you came from.

Could you elaborate on the Navionics app? Particular to the Garman units or just a generic Android apps?

the Navionics app can be used on any smart phone....both iphones and android based models.....it really does work well.....get the 'enhanced version'.....it cost a little more but worth it IMO....i boat on inland lakes 99.9% of the time so i do not need an elaborate GPS/chart plotter system...the Navionics app will let you map out routes to points of interest, store favorite POI's, track your route for easy return, shows restaurants and marinas and other POI's, shows water depths, shows danger areas, shows your travel speed, has adjustable viewing features such as highlighting shallow water, and many more features.....

i am not connected to Navionics in any way....just a satisfied customer....

I have checked out the Navionics web app and it looks pretty complete. How does it compare to the Garmin maps that come preloaded on the chartplotters (not the vision maps)? Does it require and internet connection or can you just download the lake/river you are on ahead of time (my Nexus 7 is wifi only). Thanks

I don't want to mess with tablets and things. I've got g2 vision map cards and the plotter is easy to use on a boat.. so thats my take on it.

For the Garmins combo Fishfinder/GPS (541s, EchoMAP 50s) is a transducer needed for the fish finder portion of the combo screen?

Thanks....

you download the maps that you want from the internet ahead of time.....then it uses your phone's GPS to track where you are and your speed when activated.....i'm not real tech savy on this stuff so i don't know if you have to have an internet connection for the GPS function on your phone to work.....don't have any experince with the Garmin units so can't make a comparison.....

EDIT: i did a little research after this post and i believe that once the maps are downloaded to the phone you do not need an internet connection to use the app....it appears the phone GPS system does not require an internet connection to provide basic information such as location and speed.....but i think an internet connection would be required if you were using the phone GPS for land travel and wanted to do a search for a specific address....

Perfect. Thanks I will give it a try before I decide on a Garmin. My tablets GPS works great without internet I just needed to make sure I could download maps ahead of time. For $50 it's worth a try. I guess I could try the low def $10 version first.

I am curious what your thoughts on the G2 Vision Card are - I had thought about ordering one for my 531s as it has an SD slot just for that, but found really the pre loaded maps seemed to do pretty good for what I do. I had asked about it on this forum some time ago, and never really got any feedback from anyone that had the G2 card.
I would appreciate any feedback!

Of course, my 205 is still under cover, so tough to take pictures. I have a Garmin 300C fishfinder/depth sounder, and basically made a mount to use one of the gauge holes on the dash to mount it into. I had to switch the trim gauge to the other side (to put the Garmin on the gunwale side), but it's rock solid and out of the way. Spliced into the switched power leads and good to go.

I think for those of you going with larger equipment, a RAM mount makes good sense. The smaller sport boats simply don't have much room for electronics.

I'll try to get pictures next time the cover's off.

On my new 240 Sundeck, I chose not to mount my lowrance elite 4. Instead, I am using a nexus 7 tablet for Nav with the Navionics App. I also stream pandora from the tablet to the stereo. It is mounted using a case logic mount that has a gel suction cup. It adhered to the textured dash like it was glued in place. My goal was to not drill holes in this boat.
The Navionics APP is great. On the 7 in tablet very useable. What I really like is that at home I can route plan and save the route for when we get out on the boat. Very happy with the setup, and do not miss my fixed GPS.

Sorry - here are the pictures I was referring to earlier. I had a blank gauge space, so I made a backing plate and attached within the cutout (so I could reverse it if I ever let the boat go).

It's rock-solid and is out of the way, which is an added bonus. Hope this helps!

Looks great! Smart idea to use the space for a unused gauge....

Thanks for the photos. I am looking for a good place for my VHF on the 190. Not as many spots as your boat.

Im going to mount mine right on top of the dash, I can't find any other spot that doesnt make it hard to see the buttons and would allow a guest on my boat to operate it in a situation.

I could use it mounted out of the way, but that little DSC button needs to be easily accessible.

Just purchased my chartplotter (50s) and I am going to order some RAM mounts tomorrow. Can you tell me how that mount to the window frame worked out? It appears you have the smaller diameter RAM did you have any movement in choppy water? Can you tell me the RAM part number? Thanks.

Finally got around to pulling the boat into the drive and uncovering it.
Here are a couple of pics how I have my 531s mounted using a ram mount.
That ram mount arm is 6", think I am going to order a shorter one - 3" - and see if I like that better.

Only thing I am concerned about is that windshield support rod that it is mounted to, twists around so don't know how much of a pain that might be when on the water. I think the shorter ram mount arm will help.

I believe the below is what I ordered at the time.

I did get the shorter 3" arm to replace the 6" I had though, worked out pretty good, however it does twist when hitting some chop - that support pole twists freely in the sockets. Bit of a nuisance, but still I like where it is and how it is mounted. I occasionally just have to move it back aside. Guess I could duct tape around those brackets, but that would look like crap lol...

Edit: Check this thread out, it is one I started back when I first got my GPS, and where I got the information on the ram mounts.

I'm trying the Ram mounts, picked up the ram a can (not tight in the oversize cup holders on my 180), have a suction cup with the larger ball, and hope to get that to hold the Ram lightning rod holder. There are a lot of curves on the boat, so cannot get it here I would _really_ like it to be.

Maiden voyage should be this weekend if I get all the stuff handled, will report on how the single suction cup withstands a trolling rod,
