Horn quite working

I notice last weekend that our horn makes a very faint sad sound now. It was working fine last year when we last used it. The only think I could think was water got down into it, but are they not water proof? The thin paper looking film appears to have been torn, and part of it is missing. I have not pulled it apart yet. Any thought?

I got pulled over on the lake last weekend (apparently you can't stand at the helm except at slow no wake speeds...I need a flip up bolster seat). The officer then proceeded with a safety check and said he would take my word that the horn worked...I still haven't tested it this year. Think I'll do that today.

Sorry, I don't have any advice...maybe check the connections.

I had the same thing happen to me, that thin paper protector tore and water got into the horn and destroyed it. Marine Max replaced it under warranty. I take a little more care when washing the boat so not to directly point the hose pressure into the horn, I figure my pressure washer is what damaged it the first time. Your boat is is pretty new, just take it in for warranty service.

remove it and drain water, most likely will come back to "live"

What fun would that be? I called MM and they said they have a small hole in them to drain the water, but uf the filter or paper was torn, it could allow foreign objects in which could clog the drain. I will remove it and drain it this weekend.

In the past, I drilled extra holes in the horn housing to help the water escape that pathetic thing S/R calls a horn.

I used to carry a "can of horn" with me because I didn't trust the one on my 270

MM lied to you.
new style, with "weird, electronic" sound, don't have drain holes and there is no good way to drill one without damaging the horn
older styles didn't have drain holes too, but many dealers used to drill one or two to save on repairs
those horns are not designed to be mounted to collect rain water

Pull the unit out and spray it with WD-40. Let it set overnight. Plug it back in and see if it works, if it does, brush on a very THIN coat of grease. It will keep the water and moisture off of it for the season if not longer.

I just pulled a set of electric air horns from the dumpster at the marina. Took them apart and cleaned them up, they work perfect. The guy who tossed them wasn't too happy...

What do you mean you can't stand at the helm? Of course you can and it's alot safer than sitting in most cases. Even more so when your going fast. The guy that stopped you was a moron.

There's a law that says you can't stand at the helm? I've never heard of such a thing!

You guys all need to quit messin' around with that pathetic little horn and get yourselves some air horns. They are quite manly and it's really fun to scare the bejesus out of your unsuspecting friends and marina neighbors. Especially the hungover ones.

It amazes me that boats are equipped with such pathetic horns. Nothing like having 35 foot cruiser bearing down on me in my lil' old 185 sport and the only way I can warn him of my presence is a little 'sqeek" from the horn. :smt013

Michigan law (inland lakes at least) states that you must be sitting in a designated seat within a seating area of the boat...not on the gunwale, not standing, etc...if it's not a seat you can't sit there. He told me that they tolerate putting a knee on the seat and standing on the other leg. He clearly understood and stated that it is easier to see while standing but the law is the law. Oh, and they were under cover in a small fishing boat, I didn't even realize it was the police until I got up close...just thought a couple guys wanted to tell me something or ask a question. At the time, I was slowing down to enter a little channel between lakes.

From the Michigan laws....."
Riding on the Bow is illegal if the vessel is not equipped with bow seating and the vessel is operating at greater than "slow, no wake speed." Persons also are not allowed to ride on the gunwale. While underway, persons on a vessel may not sit, stand, or walk on any portion of a vessel not designed for that purpose.".............. I'm sure they are talking about area's of the boat "NOT designed for that purpose" ie the swim platform, sun pads, etc. According to the idiot who stopped you if someone stands up in your boat while underway in any area you could get fined? What if you see a hazard in the water and need to stand to see it better to prevent an accident? This guy would fine you?

While I was out on Lake Erie this morning getting thrashed around on my father-in-laws Trophy I started to think about what I posted. I believe the local law enforcement would have to make a judgement call here. I personally think its stupid and I barely ever sit while I'm at the helm...but then again my boat isn't exactly designed to stand at the helm either...who knows.

Sorry to the OP for stealing the thread.

Oh, and I tested my horn...still works and is louder than crap when it bounces off the garage wall into your ear!

Does anyone know where the pathetic horn on my 340 is located?I want to replce it with one that actually make a noise.
