We use copper mesh screen from Ace Hardware. keeps the barnacles off.

That is the correct p/n for the standard vent filter without the 5/8 garden hose barbed ends. It has the 5/8 GH male thread on each end.

You can also just pick the foam out of the end of it, dump out all the charcoal, reload it with fresh activated charcoal, from the pet store, put a wire mesh hose gasket thingy on it and reinstall. That's what I did with mine.
