I want to broadcast my Ipod to other boats around me. The off the shelf FM Modulators have small range and noise. Has anyone tried the higher power FM Transmitters? I am interested in Brand/Model and your experience.

I like your thought process here. Listen to 5+ different stereos/types of music gets to be a bit stressful at times when rafting or slipped together.

We have also tried the 12V and one battery powered off the shelf FM transmitters with poor results. Range is very low. So low that you get interference even within your boat or car. Sound quality is also not very good.

From our own very limited experimenting, the best one has been the Apple, but it will only plug into a ipod, not other brand MP3 players.

I’m hoping someone can come on here and recommend a good one.

FCC limits FM transmitters' broadcast power to 250mv so all off-the-shelf transmitters will be limited by this rule. I have a C Crane transmitter which can be adjusted (at your own risk) to exceed the 250mv limit. Available at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Crane-FMT-Digital-Transmitter-Adapter/dp/B0000E6I1N or directly from the manufacturer http://www.ccrane.com/radios/fm-transmitters/fm-transmitter.aspx. Just make sure you feed it full 6 volts of power, performance is not as good using two AA batteries.

I have seen this one under several names. I want one with more power, they are available. I see two problems with this one. It is six volt, and inexpensive. I have played with these and low power means noisy at greater range.

I want one that requires more power and therefore will produce more power. I just am hoping to not be the experimenter here and lean on the experience of the CSR group.

Does exactly what you are looking to do. I used it this past weekend and it worked past 100 feet, crystal clear. This was using it on battery power and the small retractable metal antenna. It comes with all kinds of cables to connect the unit and even has an additional antenna that can give extended range. Fantastic product and it was about $100.

Ah yes the old Illudium Q-36 modulator, Bugs never had very good luck with that one, the Martian customer service rep is very finicky.

Glad someone got it.

Remember; never take someone else’s modulator. You will make them angry.....VERY angry indeed!"
