Help with subwoofer location...

The speaker in the back port corner does share space with the engine room. So I would guess that the stbd. next to the shower does too. In fact, that speaker on the port side backs right up to engine air intake. That's the one with the bad cone. Duct tape holding it together now.:wow:

I may have to address this in my sound proofing project. I may see if I can do a small enclosure for these when I replace them. I have used PVC pipe with MDF back and face plates in the past to make enclosures for coaxials.

Responding to your second subwoofer install . . .

Your sub mounted up front will provide a localized bass signal up front. As you move to the back seating area you will notice a significant drop out in bass presence. You would want to find a second location in rear of cockpit.

It is hard to contain and reinforce Sub bass in an outdoor environment.

Yeah if you get a picture of yours that would be great to see. The area on my helm facing the port lounger (the area front and central in my first picture) though is a compound curve that will be difficult to mount one into.[/QUOTE said:

I really like it. Is the vent cover flexible? It looks like it is flat? What is the outside size of the vent? Yours does not seem to have as much curve as mine does but they should be the same boat. Thanks a bunch for the picture.

I think they have the same curvature... the vent (looks great by the way) is only an inch from the base of the seat. Take a tape and just do some comparisons... even if you put a 10" sub you may only need a 8" vent or maybe less. just have to do some planning.

The cover is flat... seems to be made out of some sort of pvc/plastic material. Not flexible. Don't have the size but can get that this weekend. This is the facory set up as of the year 2000. I'll also look at the paperwork for the system and see if that gives any info.

If you drop down below the curve at the top it is a very flat area from top to bottom. There is still a curve from front to back but it is slight and a thin piece of starboard will likely bend enough to easily cover it. How is the enclosure attached on the inside of the helm seat? Could you snap a pic or two of the inside of the helm seat?

Here's how mine was setup. I detected no harmonic issues. It just rocked.

Just make sure that where ever you install it that you back it with a sizeable piece of plywood. Another great idea that came from HIFI.

Since it seems putting a sub and a 6.5 inch woofer in the same panel is not a problem, the area below may be my best bet. This is similar to the location used by Lake Erie Boater above. The plywood mounting ring is what I planned on using behind the fiberglass to stiffen the panel. I wonder will this be enough especially since there are already cutouts in this panel. The only issue here will be finding a new location to mount the fire extinguisher. I am finding none of the holes (there are 6 in the picture - 4 from the current fire extinguisher mount and 2 that I believe were from the original fire extinguisher) in this boat were bored correctly. None are chamfered.

This is the other location that I have but it would probably do best in this location in an enclosure instead of infinite baffle ( and I already have an IB sub). There are enclosure specifications given for the IB sub I have so it is not entirely off the table.

This location would have the back of the sub going into the shelf above the aft sleeping quarters seen here.

I noticed another potential spot looking at the pictures just above the port lounge seat aft of where the factory clarion speaker is located. It would just be difficult to get behind this panel to look at what is there before I cut the hole.

I ended up placing the sub in the location shown in the first picture above. I will snap a pic of it soon.

I am working out my plans to update my system on my 270 and came across your thread. Care to share your experience with your mounting location? How did the sound turn out? How about your bow mounted TV setup, what route did you end up taking for your antenna?

I am getting ready to install my sub (JL 10") in the same location that you had indicated (under the existing helm speaker) and would like some more information.

1. How did it work out sound wise? Is it over powering at the helm?

2. How did you route the speaker wire to that area?

3. How did you get the plywood backing ring behind the mounting area? Did you split it? I am concerned that the fiberglass wall in that area is to thin to mount the sub without additional support.

4. Any pictures?

Thanks

sorry so late. I do note get on the forum much anymore.

The sub sounds great. It does not overpower the helm.

I noticed you found the pictures of the wire run already.

I cut a plywood backing ring, coated it with thinned epoxy, cut a slit in it, then was able to thread it behind the fiberglass. I put a bit of epoxy on the plywood to glue it to the fiberglass so it stays in place if I remove the sub. The hole created for the sub provides great access to items behind that piece of fiberglass. I can snap some pictures of it but it may be a week or so before I get around to posting them.

page 11 in this thread has a list of links to most of my projects that I completed on the 270.

Good luck.

John.

I would be interested in seeing photos of this, when you get around to it.
