I so want to get a gps but the garmin i saw was like 1400 bucks then you have to buy this chip for 300.. its nice tho it takes you to where ever you want to go and shows pictures and arial views... but i cant afford it.. i got lost once and my map helped. But im really in the market for a handlend gps with navigation... But then again i only have a 20 ft boat so its not like i can go deep sea, just want to get right to certain islands and back without going through shallow areas. I have a little 300 dollar hand held black and white one but it shows nothing in the water... it just directs you in a straight line.. not good with all the shallow areas in teh gulf.. the gulf is like a shallow bathtub sometimes..

Not sure what happen to my post so here it goes again:

I got a Garmin 3205 on Ebay. Normally it's $1200 at Westmarine but I only paid $400 for it and installed it myself saving another $300-$800 from a few places I called. The 3205 has all the maps built in so no need to buy anything extra (yet). I will eventually add a fish finder and maybe xm weather to it since it's network ready and you just add those things on.

Keep an eye on Ebay there are great deals on there all the time.

Welcome Aboard :thumbsup: . Post some pics of your boat in the virtual marina :smt024 .

Yea i have a 300 dollar garmin fish/depth finder with color screen and i love it .. but ima keep a look out for ebay.. thats the reason why i wanna get a hand held unit for navigationand gps cause i dont feel like taking out all the wiring and unit out to put in a new one.

Crock;

I have a small Garmin 76 that I have used for now going on 6 years. it's not expensive and if I have the resolution set right It shows me all the channel markers as weel as all my waypoints.

Boating in the Tampa Bay area you need 2 absolutes. a decent GPS and a VHF. I don't see an antenna on your boat so I hope you have a hand held.

Nearly every week you see where someone went offshore, broke done or sunken and if they where lucky they where found a day or two later when they where reported missing.

Be Safe and Enjoy.

YES i have a hand held vhf thats is water proof and if the boat sinks it can be submerged in water and still work.. that bay boy cost me over 200 bucks! And i have a garmin gps but it dont show channel markers... or maybee it does not sure. i use it for hunting..

crock;

which garmin do you have? and have you played with the zoom in/out feature. mine doesn't give me depth and for the most part it's not that big a deal as I follow the channels most of the times until I get to know an area.

Once I have a couple of tracks layed into the GPS I simply follow my old tracks in and out of the bay or to destinations along the coast.
