Hate boating on Holidays.

We're on a mooring ball in Annapolis harbor to watch the fireworks. An despite a well marked, sizable 6 knot zone, you'd be amazed at the number of boats making wakes through the mooring field. After getting bounced on Sunday I spotted one coming in at 15 knots at least. Picked up the radio and said "Moron in the center console, slow it down." Instantly slowed to no-wake. So I have to applaud him for two things - having the radio on and knowing his name :)

I kinda have the same issue as the wife is still working. She's 10 years younger than me and would like to quit but right now she's making too damn much money. And I didn't get to quit until I was 66....why does she get to quit at 57? Is my logic flawed?

I'm going to leave the Cobalt in the water for the summer and at 23' it's much easier to handle alone. And with our summertime weather here you have to grab boat days when you can.

I’m 64, she’s 61. I was always the breadwinner and continue in that role in retirement, her job is more to keep her in spending money than anything else. I’ve never even looked at one of her paychecks, we never counted on it for paying bills or investing for retirement, so we really wouldn’t feel it if she stopped working.
At this point her job is doing little more than getting in the way of my travel and leisure plans.
I told her that if she doesn’t stop working soon I’m just going to start making plans that don’t include her.
That didn’t go over well.........

This weekend we were passing through second narrows which is a small 300ft wide pass through bridge pylons, during the tidal change. The current was moving at 7 knots, and so it was extremely choppy. There were probably 6 or 7 boats passing through in either direction and we had all slowed to about 10kts. First because of the choppy current, and second because it's courteous. It can be pretty precarious for a sailboat motoring through as is, add to that a boat like mine or bigger throwing a substantial wake ...can make for a scary situation. Anyway low and behold a 30ft express cruiser came barreling through at what had to be 30Kts, bow bouncing up and down like a basketball. He was weaving in and out and around traffic going in both directions ..AND he had what must have been 10 people riding on his bow. Some people just want to die.

We pick up the boat tonight, hit the bars and clubs in downtown st pete, we will sleep and wake up at the marina then head out early to beat the crowd. Then, we will sit back and enjoy. We plan on watching the fireworks at 9, then heading back to the marina at 10, home by midnight. Then, back to work on Thursday! Will let you know if I run into any of the crazy people on the water.

Where are you moored? Are we neighbors?

Holidays ????... that sounds like last weekend around me... and it seems to be getting worse...someone mentioned boating license and agree completely.... problem is there also needs to be a common sense license

There are many things in life that should require training and a license. Chief among them, parenting....just sayin'. Our marina sheds are typical. Two rows of bow-in boats, opposite each other. You've heard the old admonishment about not running with scissors; How about children running at break-neck speed between two rows of delta and plow anchors, right at about curtain-climber head height? That was last weekend in my shed.

Lots of articles about how holidays like the Fourth of July and Memorial Day bring about more boating accidents. I get that! More accidents because of more people boating, right? But then I wonder if it's "statistically" equal. I feel there is about a 40/60 ratio of boaters on ANY given day that actually know what they're doing compared to complete and utter idiots. Holidays it goes up to about 20/80.

Surprised you made it out... we bailed on the fireworks etc. Was too crappy last weekend.

You don't have to let us know....they will be there, they always are.

Well I will consider myself fortunate as I spent two nights on the the boat this year watching fireworks without incidents. While I only have to travel a few miles from my dock to see Fairfield and Bridgeport's fireworks, I was happy that most people behaved like boaters. On occasion a few people come into the area a little fast for my liking, but this year was calm. I love the fireworks from the boat and don't see myself ever not doing it.

The nice thing about where we are, is we see awesome fireworks at the public ramp 2 marinas down from us. We don't have to move from the slip. Front row seats!

We will drive to a nearby marina and watch the fireworks with the top down. After the fireworks, home in 10 minute to watch the can boats fly by the house with their headlights and blue running lights on.

No issues at all. Not a huge number of boats out, but more than a normal summer weekend. Weather did not permit staying in the water for the fireworks. And fireworks we’re cancelled due to technical difficulties. Regardless, had a great day, boaters were all super friendly, considerate, and zero issues getting back to the marina, other than the weather.

That’s great! Hopefully everyone had a nice 4th, without too much stress. Shame about the fireworks. I was looking at a story in NJ about a town having to cancel their fireworks show after 70+ years, because the company they hired couldn’t find a driver to bring the fireworks to the show.

We have two "friends" that I've gotten to know on another boating forum who live in the Portland, OR area. They've been on a month long cruise up the Columbia and Snake Rivers and stopped in town for a few days.

We've gotten together before on their way upriver and got to be friends. We had them over yesterday and just sat around the pool enjoying some good conversations about boating, etc. I cooked 4 racks of baby back ribs on the Treager, Tina made a couple of delicious salads and a good time was had by all.

Then we headed down to the marina and took one couple's 43' Selene out to watch the fireworks. The fireworks were great then we waited about 45 minutes for all the crazies to race each other back to their marinas before we cruised back to the marina.

More good conversation, ate a good pie that Tina made, then we headed for home. Overall, a wonderful time was enjoyed by all.

That's what we like to hear!

Well here we are again. The official start of the season. I went out early Friday before the S... hits the fan. Hopefully back out Tuesday or Wednesday after the carnage. Stay alert out there!

Yep. Here it is after midnight in our marina, and a bunch of drunks are yelling and partying down the dock.

Sometimes I think these idiots were raised by wolves, but then I feel guilty about insulting wolves.

I took the boat out Saturday after completing a bunch of work on her this spring. First time in since last November. After cruising up and back down the Tchefuncte River my friend and I tied up at the public bulkhead in the town of Madisonville (LA) for a bite and a brew. While inside some asshole stole my teak flagpole and US flag. Who does something like that?
