Well, tomorrow I Join the 60 and over year old club so a SS anchor for the 506 seemed like a great Birthday gift to buy myself. I actually ran across an opportunity to horse trade for a second hand Lewmar 44lb plow so now it is on the boat. She is a beauty!
I did however uncover a serious issue that had really not ever crossed my mind. I have really never yet had occasion to use the anchor on the 506 as we generally boat dock to dock. I paid 20 feet of chain onto the dock to facilitate the anchor replacement and as I was running the chain out with the windlass, I noticed some binding and clunking of the chain as it rounded the capstan. To my disappointment I discovered several links that are heavily corroded! I think I have about 300 feet of chain. I need to lay it all out on the dock and inspect it to see how many sections are damaged to see if I can splice in sections or replace the entire length. I really don't intend to ever use it but still need a reliable anchor and chain in case of emergency. I also like the weight on the bow. I will be installing a section of SS at the anchor for bling factor.

HB and welcome to the codgers's club! On to business. A thorough inspection of your anchor locker is in order. There should be a drain to keep water from filling up the bottom of the locker. That chain shows signs of extended exposure, so you may have a plugged drain or through-hull fitting.

That is my project today. I know it is draining as I have rinsed out the locker tin the past, this is from past exposure I am sure, probably salt water mud that was not cleaned off the chain. This was a San Diego boat so I imagine the PO used the anchor often but did not do a good job washing off the chain.

Happy Birthday youngster. I'm a little bit over 15 years ahead of you!

IMHO life gets better as you get older. Retirement years are great and I'm not sure how I had time to get all the work done when I was working plus all the work around the house.

As long as you are healthy and happy, age is just another number. Have a very Happy Birthday! ... and keep healthy.

Happy birthday! That sounds like a great way to celebrate. I'm exactly one month behind you so I'll be right there with you very soon.

Happy Birthday Captain. That chain looks older than you. My bet is a combination of poor quality chain and a wet chain locker or something attacked the galvanizing of the chain. Glad you got a chance to check this out because, as you said, even though you don't anchor much if ever, a good working anchor/windlass and ground tackle are imperative.

Happy birthday. How do you splice chain so that it still works with the windlass?

Happy Birthday

I spent the afternoon cutting about 30 feet of affected chain from my anchor set up with a total of three chain splices.
This Carver keeps turning up head scratchers for sure. I think it was built on a Friday before a holiday weekend.
While I was in the anchor chain locker cleaning the mud out that caused the chain corrosion issue, I happened to look up and find every bolt holding the bow sprit and the bow rail stanchions had no fricking nuts on them!!! They are all just glued in place with 5000 sealant! WTF!!!

That must have been done on a Friday afternoon at the factory

I'm just impressed that you have an anchor locker big enough to fit a human.
