Hanging out at the Sandbars

Shaun, is this Peanut Island?

love sandbars! but prefer the private ones. been to Peanut Island and a bit too crowded for us.

Pnut gets out of control on holiday weekends, but try a non holiday weekend because crowd totally changes lots of families with kids and dog running around

Yes it is. And to the naysayers, it is a crazy spring-break like frenzy on holiday weekends. However, on the other 48 or so weekends, it's a fun place to spend a day. The north side is a more party vibe most weekends, the west side is a bit quieter, more laid back vibe, the south side is where the Kennedy home and bomb shelter is and the east side is quiet and families/kids, snorkeling in a protected cove, etc. There is something for just about everyone and every mood there, which is why we enjoy it. And I'm not that young, or stupid.

This is what a "normal" weekend looks like at Peanut. Our labs love it there.

That's a Sunday afternoon. Nothing too crazy there.

Holy cow, are there constant wakes beating you and your boat up?

? Not sure why you say that? It's all slow no wake and there's no wake around the island. The only thing to contend with is extremely fast incoming and outgoing tides as it's right at the inlet.

when i was there on a sunday afternoon there were tons of police controlling speed. it's a slow no wake zone all around it. i was just over idling and got called out to slow down by the patrol.

There have been many reports of fights ending in several people being bloodied at Peanut Island and once I do remember a shooting happening that I believe killed 2. That is the reason for the increased patrolling but it is well overdue. In 2011 a dad was decked while carrying a cooler with his kids at the drop off location for Peanut Island in Riviera Beach. Technically it didn't happen at Peanut Island but that is where the guy doing the punching got wasted on whatever and he started the altercations on the water taxi. Just not a great place for families any longer but hopefully Palm Beach can get this under control. They have failed so far.

Well my wife and I are there every Sunday relaxing and playing in the water with our 2 labs, but I guess my first hand observations from the current atmosphere don't mean as much as a news report from 2+years ago or some old YouTube videos so I'll concede; your right. Only young stupid people go there. Everyone should avoid it all costs. You'll got shot , shanked, pissed on or all of the above if you go. Maybe now we'll have the whole island to ourselves!

Just trying to tell everyone that visits that area to be careful.

Doesn't happen all the time but when it does, it gets out of hand REAL quick. Kind of like Urban Weekend in South Beach.

That's why I said in the previous post that there are 48 good weekends. The other 4 are Memorial Day, Floatopia, 4th of July and Labor Day. Those weekends the size of the crowd increases 10fold compared to a "normal" weekend. It's not fair to generalize a place as unsafe or unfit for family enjoyment when it should really only be avoided (unless you're in the mood to party) about 8% of the year. If you don't like it or it's not your ideal place to have fun and relax, that's OK. But your lack of interest doesn't make it unsafe.

Completely agree with Shuan on Peanut - common sense says to stay away the few times a year that it gets rowdy out there. Been there dozens of times over the years, including just a month or so ago. ALWAYS had a nice, enjoyable, and relaxing time....

And as for Whale Harbor sandbar mentioned by Dog House - that's another favorite of mine. Hit that one a few times in February and had a great time both times....

The hot one up here is on Torch Lake in Northern Michigan. It's an inland lake so there aren't any big boats - but 100's of pontoons, ski boats and runabouts. Saw some stuff there one Fourth of July that made our college age kids blush at the time.

If you're looking for trouble, you can always find it - anywhere. Even in Orlando or Ft. Pierce. Just a matter of choice and common sense.

Thanks for the clarification guys. I wish we had sandbars and warm water. Looks like a blast on those other 48 weekends. Sorry Shaun, you didn't scare me off.
