Guns in Canada

What the world doesn't seem to understand is - banning guns will only lead to more illegal guns and more criminals. It's not going to stop anyone except the law abiding citizens that don't need gun control in the first place.

What's needed is more stringent background checks that bring to light things like mental instability and things of that nature.

Can I introduce you to Illinois? Complete cluster down here. Passed an “assault“ weapons ban in the middle of the night with no hearings and debate by stripping an insurance bill and putting the ban in its place. Current owners had until Jan 1 to register their guns. They didn’t and are now criminals. Fat a$$ governor gave supreme court candidates millions for their campaigns. So we have had zero support in court. US Supreme Court has denied review on multiple occasions. Justice delayed is justice denied. We are completely screwed.

What they think is part of an assault riffle is there fully automatic and will just spray bullets everywhere. What they don't realize that is already illegal without special permits. Assault riffle or not, all semi automatics are single shot, doesn't matter what they look like. And the biggest part of what they forget is that PEOPLE pull the trigger, they don't fire themselves.

Hmm… here in the UK we have stringent gun laws, even owning a shotgun (not pump) is difficult and UK police will visit you in your home to check that the registered weapon is there and it is secured in the correct way.
It is very rare for mass shootings (we have had some bad ones) and often victims of a firearm incident are gang led contract shootings between rivals, there have been some collateral loss of life.

Most people here feel safe when going about their business, those up to no good face a different story, knife crime is on the increase, but a knife isn’t anywhere as effective for mass killing as an AR-15 equipped shooter.

A good friend is an ex-firearms copper, resident in a tough northern city, he says that in the UK, the nasty weapons such as assault rifles are used in gangland warfare. Villains use mainland European sourced handguns for robbery and contract killings, husbands/wives use shotguns on each other when required and the rest of the guilty population get traffic citations…

if the UK introduced gun laws, mass killings will go up as will more gun crime. There are only so many squirrels to shot in the UK before we would start on each other!

Owning a weapon is a constitutional right for you, glad we don’t have that in the UK.

ANY semi-automatic weapon is as effective as the other. Being an AR doesn't change that. It doesn't make it more or less effective. That gun just seems to be the weapon of choice for some, guessing, because of it's looks. I think if they didn't exist there would be another in it's place.

Let's face it, if there wasn't such a thing as mass killing, there wouldn't even be a discussion.

They think AR = Assault Rifle. Hysterical. There are people who know nothing about guns making laws to control people who know better. I have said this before, I could do way more damage with a 9mm or .45 then an AR. Dumb asses.

It’s hard to explain what is going on in Canada wrt gun laws…a US gun owner would not believe what our idiot pm has arbitrarily imposed on law abiding licensed gun owners, basically banning semi automatic rifles and handguns, but here is a sample:

As a former Canadian I can’t believe you could have another Trudeau in there….. you poor bastards

Which is why we fought The Revolution. :)

But truth be known, here in the USA true mass shootings are rare as well. To think otherwise, you have to accept the media narrative and their data which define "mass" shootings as pretty much every shooting -- and thus includes a ton of ordinary gang violence, domestic situations, targeted shootings, etc. But if you use their definition, then the weapon of choice is the handgun, not an AR type rifle. Which puts you in the classic catch 22 -- why ban ARs if the true weapon of choice is the handgun. The answer is it's not about violence at at all. It's about control.

Yep and Prickster, that “Fat a$$” just signed his 18th 30 day migrant disaster proclamation. Illinois has been under some form of a gubernatorial disaster proclamation for most of the past four years, giving the Pritzker administration sweeping emergency powers to spend taxpayer dollars.
This crap needs to stop.

I have trained with people that could do a lot of damage with a machete or even a knife. Problem is the gun free mentality only makes the criminal safe.

Unless they are black on black shootings in Chicago, then they weren't shootings at all.

This sounds like a utopian dream!! With your porous shores being invaded and arrests for posting incorrect pronouns on social media, what could go wrong on the little island of yours? Sounds like the UK has both our 1st and 2nd amendments covered.;)

You Americans do have a constitutional right to own guns. That’s a fact. You also have much more gun violence and accidental deaths than any other non third world country. That’s also a fact. They are connected facts, not random coincidences, but it’s your right and your country.

You also all feel you “need” guns to defend yourselves from others that have guns. Those of us living in Canada, Australia, the UK, Japan and most of Europe don’t have that fear. That’s also not a coincidence.

I have a Canadian firearms licence and a restricted firearm licence (to own grandfathered handguns). I own guns for hunting and pleasure shooting. Not for self defence. I don’t fear gun violence and neither do most law abiding Canadians. I wish I could have access to the guns you have, but for fun, not for defence. I know many of you don’t feel that sense of security.

And Trudeau needs to go. And he will.

You had your chance the last election to get rid of the ass and you screwed up

I think some of you Canadians have a strange view of us Americans. Possibly also need to put your facts in context with population.

I don't and none of the people I know also don't feel the "Need" for guns to defend. There is a want and for the same reason target shooting (fun) and some for hunting. I also don't know anyone who fears gun violence in their lives.

Home invasion is a real thing and on the rise. I feel very secure everywhere I go. Also the old adage, don't bring a knife to a gun fight. But I also like knives as well.

And I think Biden and Trudeau need to go ...

Well, I know you are referring to the collective "you" and not this guy, since I have never once voted for anything other that Conservative. Trudeau is way down in the polls and as long as Pierre Poilievre stays out of the far right, he can easily win the moderates in Canada. He's a good guy, but he's pandering to get the fringe right votes, and he risks losing the moderates that swing vote, and who vastly outnumber the far right.

And no, you don't have a gun "problem", you have a gun system. And widespread access to guns applies to all people, good and bad. So there are consequences to that freedom. If there are a lot of guns out there, some of them will be in the wrong peoples hands.
