Grill installation

The swimstep is solid fiberglass, right? I've never drilled into fiberglass before. Tips? Sorry if this seems like a silly question. Do you remember what size bolts you used?

The SP on my 320 was solid glass. I don't recall if bolts came with the mount (very possible they did). Otherwise, just go to WM and get some. Don't forget the nuts, washers and 4200.

There's nothing magical to it. Put blue tape to prevent gelcoat from chipping. It will make the holes marking easier too. Measure several times to make sure the mount is in the best spot in regards to the ladder and the lid cutout (U-shape to lean nicely on the grill leg when the grill in place). Mark all the holes and drill. When installing the bolts use extra 4200 on the bolts. The idea is to isolate and protect exposed fiberglass from water by filling the gap with 4200. Put on the threads (all over the bolt), under the mount and under the washer. Don't over tighten to prevent cracking the SP gelcoat. Tighten like you're installing a car tire (criss-cross).

Double check the base, but I believe they were #12 bolts. Of course Stainless Steel. If the #12 aren't to deep in the countersink, they would be 1/4"-20. Even oval head would look nice.

I used oval head. The nuts were (I forgot the proper term.... "self locking"?) the ones with plastic ends.

I picked up the stainless 1/4"-20 bolts, washers and lock nuts and some 3M 4200. Wasn't sure how thick the fiberglass is going to be so I bought a few different size bolts. I think I'm going to like the grill in it's new location.

Ok all done!

Great job, Brian. Looks like Todd's table is a perfect solution with this kind of a setup. I like the clips. But, I used those that under the engine hatch that hold cockpit table leg. Now it's time to get the grill going and enjoy new boating season.

Well done Brian. Does the deck socket hole have a drain hole in it? I really like the table. I think I have an idea how you have it fastened to the hand rail...would you mind posting a pic of the underside sometime?

Jeff
You can see in this photo the way the table clips to the transom locker rail and the feet nestle on the transom door.
Let me know if you're interested.

Thanks Jeff and Alex. The hole doesn't have a drain and I didn't drill one based on Alex's experience not needing one. I did buy the plastic hole cover, however. Brian
