We got the new Magma "Newport" grill shortly we bought the boat, but I haven't installed until yesterday.
I decided to get the pedestal mount and install the base out of the way under the swim step lid.

Here's the underside of the swimstep. Mounted with some 5200

This only took about 20 Minutes~very easy installation

The pedestal disconnects from the Grill and the base. I'll stow the pedastal and the propane can in the transom locker and I made a plywood base

for the grill to mount sit in. It's mounted to the platform the water tank is on.
The lower Black cup that's on the grill will go into the hole in the plywood.
Here's the grill stowed in the bilge.

Todd, sweet looking set-up. I was thinking of doing the same thing on ours however the ladder is right in front of the transom walk through.
Nice work, that thing is screaming for some fresh seafood and kabobs

Nice work.

Make sure your transom locker is sealed from your engine compartment... it "should" be...

Just an FYI: I had a few rusting bolts on the underside of my swim platform and I pulled them off and sure enough the seal was broken (I'm not sure they ever put caulk in a few of these holes). There is wood in that core and it had started to rot (boat was 3 years old). I paid to have it gouged out and the underside fiberglass fixed and the holes sealed up right... you may want to look at that.

This is what we cooked last night.

The Admiral made Halibut and Shrimp kabobs, with Bacon wrapped asparagas

Thanks Gary, yes the transom locker is sealed out.
But I'll have a look at those transom bolts. They've kind of bugged me since I bought her, but I've had other projects.

Todd, Curious? Doesn't Monica get mad when you take pictures of your food? :smt043That's a great set up you have. I really like the storage area you have built for it.:smt038

Todd,

Great job. That is a great place for the grill. I have a similar swim platform and may do something similar.

Looks good Todd! Only one question... What happens if someone wants to go swimming while you're cooking? The reason I ask is that most of the time while I'm grilling the wife spends her time in the water. Granted, it's during mid summer when it's really hot but I would have problems with this set-up. Although I like it, I don't think I could get away with it...

you could put the ladder down before you put the grille up.

i'm stealing your idea for putting the grille in the ER. that is a great idea.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys.

RR,
Usually by the time we're grilling, we done with the water sports.

Todd,

It looks pretty good. It's one of the options I also exploring. The only thing that I'm not quite confident is that there's always lots of messy stuff falling from the grill and if the latter is in it's place (not in the water) all this mess would get in by the latter mounts and would effect smooth operation. Not sure how long you've used it. How's it from your experiance?

BTW, did anyone looked in to electrical grills?

I really liked the way they're setup in Formula (if I recall correctly from 34PC and up). This looks like a slick installation and no worries about having enough propane cans.

Alex,
I installed it Saturday morning so, I've only used it once, but this model does have a nice drip tray. I'll cutting up some foil to stick in there and make clean up easy.

A friend of mine has the same boat and I am sure he will appreciate the pictures. That is a slick installation. Do you think it would be a good idea to use a backing plate? It just looks like that if the post gets bumped that it would be likely that the nuts and washers would pull right through the fiberglass.

I doubt it.
The transom is solid cored. It's very tight and I didnt' feel that it needed a back plate.

I did have my friend Greg make me an aluminum ring to act as the backing plate for my cockpit table though. The Engine hatch in the cockpit has a softer core and the original screws used were stripped out.

I drilled and tapped the ring to accomodate 1/4"-20 stainless steel machine screws

I see what you mean. Nice install! I have a 2006 260DA and there is no way to repeat that installation and I don't want it to be a toe grabber. I will probably go with a rod holder mount on the port side.

There should be no reason the lid isn't shut when the grill is not in use. So unless you have the lid up when the ladder's deployed there is no way for it to be a toe grabber

Bump. I'm thinking of going this route. Is the Magma base self draining or did you have to drill a hole in it? I can see it filling with water. Anyone else here mount the grill this way? Brian

I drilled a drain hole and sealed the hole edges with 5200.

Brian,

I didn't bother with the hole and just wiped it ones in a while. Whatever water gets there it's circulating on/off. The powder coated base around the bolts was much more of a problem after about 2yrs. I don't recall the leg opening going bad, b/c of some water getting in there.
