We have some friends in from out of town and put around 90 miles on the Laguna today. Very comfortable and great ride. Finally got the new name on recently, too.

Upon leaving the Jupiter inlet we were greeted with a 2-3' following sea which I was very comfortable with. As we got is we got closer to the St. Lucie inlet the seas got more like 4-6'. Although rough, the Laguna handled the seas well and was a fairly comfortable ride. As we made the turn towards the inlet, heather indicated to me that she saw an overturned boat. I told her she was crazy and continued, but upon her insistence I looked closer and realized there was indeed a capsized boat. This is what we found....and we were the only boat in the water.

I would not normally think about taking pics at a time like this but the coast guard asked me to and gave me a number to text them too. I made it clear to them that I had 4 souls on board and their safety in these building seas was my priority but I would remain in the area searching until they arrived on scene as long as it was reasonably safe. The Sheriffs dept was on scene about 10 min after my initial emergency call. The coast guard was Amazing with me on the radio and made me feel so good about what they do in an emergency. Good news...about 3 minutes after they got on scene it came across the radio that the soul occupant had made it to shore. Great day on the water and because it ended happily, I'm so much more confident in the way the coast guard responds when needed.

P.S. After being in easily 5-6' seas, I'm even more in love with my Laguna!! So are my guests. :)

Wow what a finish to the day! Glad you and the boater were all ok. Any idea what the boat was?

I believe it was a 17-19' Yellowfin. We left before they drug it out as I wanted to get my passengers to safety ASAP. But from what I could see, that's what it looked like.

Wow.
On a couple of fronts...... The rough seas with out of town guests. Spotting the overturned boat (good job Heather). And then you taking what seems to me to be the appropriate actions. Not sure I could have handled it as well as you did. Good job Shaun.

Good work. Tell the boss lady, "good eyes".

I did. Told her I was very proud of her. As rough as the seas were and as little of the boat that was showing, it was indeed a good eye.

Thank you. As a side note, our out of town guests are avid boaters and very comfortable on the water. We've boated with them in Michigan for years. I would have never taken non-boaters in those sea conditions. I've never had a "boating emergency" before and wasn't sure how id handle it. What I found was my years of fire dept/radio experience came back to me and I believe I gave them far more and detailed info than they normally receive. All and all it went well and we were very happy with the outcome as we truly believed we were boating overtop a deceased boater and that was a terrible feeling.

Good on ya for resorting back to your training and experience and not panicking in that situation. Many would...you didn't. Good job.

Nice pics of the waves. Those can be a bit on the bouncy side on a 19' boat. Glad ya'll made it back safe and sound.

Thank you. The Laguna is actually 24' but it was still a rough ride. :)

Good job Shaun! We'll be making landfall in Florida today, let me know if there is a time we might be able to visit, even if it is a relatively short one.

Anytime today or any evening this week I'll make available if you can mage it work.

Probably Wed evening would still work best, if you guys aren't snowed in.

We do have a cold front coming through the middle of the week but I'm sure the plows will be able to keep up with it! Give me a text and let me know for sure. Safe travels.

Sometimes the plows have a hard time clearing 10 feet of sunshine, but we manage!

Well done Heather and Shaun :smt038! The Coasties will have you both in their Auxiliary fleet yet:)
