i am headed to the lake this weekend and planning on taking my glomex antenna off to return for a shiny new one! are there any tips i need to know before i go? i heard there was a special tool to take it off? i just dont want to get up there and not be able to remove it and come home empty handed....

thanks in advance!

How much are shiny new ones now?

Someone had posted previously that they are warranteed for life and will get replaced at no charge. I cannot confirm this first hand though. I still have the original which I no longer use but have been keeping for when I sell someday. The new buyer may not want Directv.

Does anyone have the info on where to send your glomex back for replacement?? Thanks in advance

go to imtra.com and get the number to call them. they will give you a authorization # to send it back. i told them i was having a hard time getting it clean... they will send you a new shiny one!

The special tool you need is to remove the coax cable since it is up in the tube. I bought one on line but your local West Marine store may have one. It is made out of nylon.

When I took mine off, I found (like many others have reported) that when the antenna was crammed on at the factory, the coax bent and came loose from the F type connector. The line was too short/tight to pull enough out of the top of the mount to reattach the new antenna properly without bending the cable.

I opened the access disc under the arch and pulled the coax out through there, cut off the bad end and put a new conenctor on. I then got a 2' piece of new coax and using a splice connector and shrink wrap, attached the new length. Then fed it back up through the Glomex mount, put on a new connector and used the Glomex tool to screw the connector on to the antenna. Then lowered the antenna on to the mount while pulling the slack back down through the access hole. Tightened antenna and put slack loop up in the arch and it has worked perfectly ever since.

The tool you need costs about $2 and can be ordered from Imtra when you RMA the antenna. They may just offer to throw one in the box. The antenna you get is new in the box but it will not come with this tool. You can probably just cut the coax or pull it out of the connector when you remove the old antenna so as not needing the tool to remove. As with mine, it may not even be connected. You will probably have to reconnectorize the end anyway.

My neighbor who has a 2003 280DA just returned the tuner, the box that is inside the cabin because the gain knob would turn and turn but would never stop. I told him to call and they sent him a new one a no charge. From what I've read on this site is they have a real strong customer service department.

They will replace it but you have to send the old one back first so you will not be able to keep both.

Mine came off with just a plan allen wrench. I took it off last winter and painted it with plastic paint I got at Home Depot. light sanding quick spray and it looks good as new.

Just like to ask, why Glomex and not a Sea Watch Antenna?
I'm in the market to buy a TV antenna this year and would like to know if Glomex is better then Sea Watch.

Just off the top of my head; I don't think Shakesphere will replace it for you in 10 years if it stops working or the housing oxidizes. Also, last time I saw a SeaWatch it was not quite as sleek as the Glomex. Looked bulky had exposed wires and a Red LED light on it. Not sure if they have updated their design.

Don't get me wrong, I think Shakesphere makes quality products but the Glomex warranty is clearly superior. If you shop around, you can find it priced reasonably.

I guess I'd feel guilty asking for a replacement because my 10yo one didn't look like new, so I wax mine and it looks good. Just sayin', that's all.

Woody, I am pretty sure the only reason they are switching these older ones out for cosmetic reasons is because there was a problem known to them with the material used on the older ones. I have read rumblings of this before and although I was not specifically told that, based on the conversation, that was the assumption I got and I will leave it at that. Mine had heavy oxidation and the plastic was actually starting to break down; on, at the time, barely a 4 year old boat. Don't know if the PO waxed it but I do now. When you return the antenna they decide if it is defective and send a new one if that is the decision so no reason to feel guilty. It is their call. I say it is standing behind their product possibly stronger than any other manufacturer I have ever dealt with. They once sent me a knob for my AMP free because it was lost. It is this type of service that justifies all the recommendations I have given them to date.

i called them and asked for cleaning tips. mine has what appears to be mildew on it... but it has been impossible to clean. as soon as i asked the rep how to clean it he said for me to stop cleaning it and send it back to him for replacement. i was never looking for a freebie. i am in a business where i have to warranty my workmanship for 15-30 years and can relate to standing behind a product. big  to them for standing behind their product!

I was looking at mine last week and it does look horrible, and I thought, maybe I could spray some Star Brite Non Skid cleaner on it and hand scrub it with a magic eraser to brighten it up a bit.

Any Thoughts:huh:

Yeah, Sounds like you need to call them for cleaning tips and you'll get a new one! :smt038
