I am only able to send and recieve on my Norstar NS100 at close range. The VHF performs the same when I completly remove the antenna cable from the main unit, so I am conviced I either have a bad antenna or a bad cable run to my antena from the VHF. I have checked all cable connections to the main unit, speaker and microphone. All look clean and aok.

I purchased a replacement Glomax 8 foot antenna. It came with a connector and I am not sure how to actually install it on the cable connector. It has threads on one side and a hollow "needle" in the middle. I am assuming I have to remove about a 1/4'' of cable housing leaving the center wire and simply thread the connector over the cable insullation using the threads on the connector leaving the center wire through the center needle? Does it have to be soldered? If so, do I just solder the inner cable to the needle in the center of the connector?

Also, what kind of connector is this?

Thanks for your help...

That looks like one of the connectors that you strip the coax like you would on a TV coax then insert and screw the coax in to the conector and solder the stinger (copper) to the inside of the tip. They should have enclosed a paper showing the length to strip each section. You may want to consider buying a Shakesphere solderless connector. They are about $8 at West Marine unless you have the solder and iron.

This kind of connector needs to be soldered.
