Generator probem

Hello,

I'm hoping somebody can shed some light on a problem I started having over the weekend with the generator on my 2006 290 AJ. It is a Kohler 5ECD model. When I was using the generator it shutdown on its own after about 10 min of operation. I looked at the display and the fault code EC72 shows, which according to the manual means "CAN Receive Message Fault". I switched the unit off and back to AUTO which cleared the fault and reset the generator. I waited a bit and started it up again. It ran for another 5 min or so and it stopped again with the same error code. This is only my 2nd year with the boat, so I`m not extremely experienced with generator things. I tried to look up the meaning of the error code online, but can't seem to find any good information. The manual only makes a few references to having a CAN Gauge, but doesn't explain what that is. From digging around my guess is that it has something to do with a Continuous power mode or something. Anyone else had this issue?

Thanks in advance for any help you might provide. It's my first time using this site, but after looking at a few of the posting headings I need to start spending a lot more time on here.

Hi Frank, I'm pretty new here also but i did have a problem with my genset about two weeks ago. Me and the wife were out for a sunset viewing and the gennie died. So I cranked her back up and she ran for about 2 minutes and died again. So I had my wife crank her while I watched to see if she was pissing. I sat and thought about what makes the gennie run and i said (to myself of course) that, well it has gas cuz the starboard tank was 3/4 full, then i checked the seacock to make sure water was coming through, that was fine, then i said well if she's not pissing it just might be the gennie's impeller. So lo and behold, I clinmbed my 5'11" 220 pound body into the bilge area and pulled the impeller cover off and BAM!!!! (Emerill LaGasse) The impeller was trashed. 30 minutes later, new impeller, she's been running good ever since. Hope that helps.

You're going to need an analyzer and factory service manual to determine what the error means. Either spend to money to hire a tech or spend the money to do it yourself.

That's funny. Why didn't you just ask your wife is she needed to use the head?

You know, now that ya mentioned it, it wasn't THAT hard but a little tricky. You kinda have to bend the little rubber impellers to a certain direction to get it to fit in. But once you're in, you're in. Take ur time and be sure to replace that little bitty rubber band gasket while ur down there. The cover is kind of misleading, it only goes on one way. Do urself a favor and pick up an extra impeller so you'll have a spare. FYI, work on your vessel when the engines r cool and have a small fan to circulate some fresh air while ur down in the hole. Good luck.
