Gas Shock Question

The gas shocks on the engine hatch/rear seat don't seem to be able to hold the weight of the seat up so I always have to prop it up with something in order to do any work. The current shocks (which I believe to be stock) are 60# shocks. Does anyone have any experience with upgrading these things to a higher rating? I think the next "size" up are 90# and I don't want to put those in if it may tear the mounts out. Also, I pulled the current ones out they seem to be very stiff still. Any ideas?

I ordered replacements for a different purpose from JMSOnline.net Marine Supply. They were cheaper than most other places, and had to special order what I needed. Very helpful.

Aboat ago, I had the same problem. I had to prop mine w/ a paddle. I finally got a wild hair and decided to change. They were wore out as well and very stiff. There should be some type of part# or s/n# on them. Do not use a stronger shock. You will probably rip out the mounting....

Swab,

I have replaced worn gas struts on several autos and boat hatches that could not hold up the item they were intended to lift yet when removed they always seem to have a lot of "life" left in them in terms of their compression resistence. But rest assured - when you get the new ones you will see the difference.
