This may be a bit "off topic" for a boating forum, but there could be something here that might affect Garmin Chartplotters.

A year ago, I purchased a new Garmin NUVI 660 for my car. It has been absolutely perfect in every respect. I use the Garmin WebUpdater function to keep the software up to date (just plug in to the USB port on my computer) and it identifies and updates. Very easy and intuitive.

At the end of a year, I purchased the Map update from Garmin for less than $100, and it, too was easy and intuitive to install.

Yesterday morning prior to driving from the Virginia Piedmont area to the Annapolis boat show (100 ++miles), I again updated the NUVI and programmed in the Annapolis destination.

Once we got under way, I noticed that the NUVI was not tracking our car's position on the map, relative to where we actually were. It appeared to be about 1000 feet or so from our actual location. :smt100

I reset the Garmin, re-calibrated the touch-screen display, ensured the WAAS function was active, all to no avail. Because the tracking/relative position display function was incorrect, NUVI would not function in the Navigation mode. :smt013

After an hour and a half of travel, all of a sudden NUVI was correctly tracking and the Navigation function was working as it should. On the trip home, NUVI was still working as it should.

On Monday, I will call Garmin Support and inquire about this experience. Either there was a glitch in the program update or for some reason, the GPS satellites were temporarily programmed to provide inaccurate user data, which, in the event of a serious threat to the U.S. mainland, could be possible.:wow:

Does anyone have any insight to what may have happened?

I cannot provide you with any reasoning unfortunately, but I can further confirm some of the anomalies that you have experienced. Since purchasing my Garmin, and using a few handhelds in the past, I just assumed that it was temporary loss of satellite signal etc. I’ll be very curious to hear what you find out.

Regards,
Chris

I just finished speaking with the folks at Garmin. They can offer no explanation for this happening with the exception of the possibility that the antenna was not completely extended out to its optimum position (parallel with the surface of the earth).

The only other possibility would have been that the Department of Defense was "playing" with the satellite telemetry information that is sent to all non-military GPS navigation devices. Garmin stated that if that had happened, DoD would not normally provide non-military GPS users any feedback concerning the disruption. Garmin did not indicate that they had other inquiries concerning similar outages.

In any event, my NUVI is working just as it should, so I am a "happy boater".

I have not experienced that with my 660. Works perfect every time. I also have never updated it so it has whatever came on it 2 years ago. Makes driving through the area of the Woodrow Wilson bridge near DC fun!
