Ugh, am I the only one annoyed by the fact that some of your customized settings don't stay on the gpsmap series. For example I like to see the tides, marpa details, motion scope, look ahead, compass/wind rose etc. All of these settings reset after every reboot. Its such a pain to go back and turn them all back on. Love my Garmin's and the functions they provide but..... I was recently running in the dark and needed to get MARPA details on a vessel and it was such a pain to hunt down the menu to re-enable this in the dark. I called Garmin and asked if they could have their engineers make this a funtion that could be saved. No one else finds this annoying to have to turn these back on every time you head out?

Mine doesn't do that unless I do a master reset the MFD. Twice on updates the system reverted and I needed to reset all of the menu bars and that was a pain. However, when I normally power up and down the system it doesn't change any of the settings.

That is strange since, as long as there is power still to the GPSMAP(s), they only go into standby. I turn mine on/off by an external switch the disconnects the power. This is how I turn my electronics on/off. I was expecting issues by doing it that way but everything stays as it was when I dumped the power.

So you don't hold the power button until it goes through it's shutdown procedure?

Really? What software version are you on and do you use some of the features i listed above? A friend of mine has the 1242xsv I believe and some of his settings reset if he navigates away from his screen. The Garmin tech was able to replicate the behavior I described on his virtual unit.

Mine are 8616's - I'm not sure what S/W F/W revision I'm at. If I bring up the radar all of the menu bars are as I left them - same as the other screens. MAPRA / EBL doesn't come back unless I activate it but I wouldn't expect it to.

My menu bars do stay however the features I mentioned do not. I don't think its a bug I think its just the way Garmin intended it to work I just don't think its useful if you fine tune your screens to your liking that you need to do it every time.

Nope, never have in over two years and the boat moves just about every weekend in season. I only stop the radar from transmitting first.

Nope, the settings you describe stay on mine. As well as everything else I have set. I have two 1243's with the latest FW.

EDIT: http://www.clubsearay.com/index.php...989-discussion-area.83064/page-3#post-1394796 Shows my default screen(s), but the radar isn't transmitting in those shots and my AIS isn't on either. But both of those are there normally there and keep their settings.

Do you have your screens saved as "Presets"? I think you have to do that to retain customizations, even if you save it under the same name as the original.

Great catch Al. That's how mine are setup. Switching to a different screen from the main selection will cause a default look to appear of the same screen.

Not familiar with doing this. Will have to check the manual,

I remember the initial set-up of presets being a little tedious. Presets are unique to the plotter and very few customizations are transmitted on the network (there's a list in the manual). So, if you have two or more MFDs you have to create presets for each plotter and for each type of screen (chart, radar, sonar).

100% Al, I only have three presets because of that. What a PITA to change to your point. I wish they would allow a clone page to network option so the other plotters could also have the same screen if needed. The data is already there so it wouldn't take much I wouldn't think.

This sounds right. I had a bunch of settings dialed in on my 8616 for radar, charts, and combo screens. When I added an 8612 I didn't find a way to send them to the new unit. I had to do through and make manual changes to get them to match up. That included setting-level heading preferences. Until I got that dialed in, the two screens were showing very different heading behaviors.

Hmmm....maybe this is why my waypoint labels keep reappearing even though I turn them off constantly.

With Garmin Waypoint labels are managed in two spots, one is for all instances and the other is for that session. Meaning while underway you can turn off tracks and labels until the power cycles. And you can dig into the settings and turn them off until you re-enable them.

I had to do that with the heading sensor. One screen was set to the AP heading sensor and the other was set to any. Was driving me crazy. I also wish the heading line was set the same on all screens.
