Garmin 740s FROZE UP.....

Spoke to mistercomputerman and to a tech at Mercruiser. That lavendar plug is the one I want to hook up to...in case anyone cares ;-)

Ron,

have some pictures on the phone will link in later. There is a short adapter cable that connects that plug to the CAN bus cable. I tried to get the part number off the one on my 496 but the label was damaged. I'm still waiting to hear back from Actisense on the applicability of their 0183 to 2000 converter in outputting all of the data from the Raymarine system.

Please keep us posted as you go forward on this one. All I have hooked up outside the standard garmin package (radar, sounder, head unit) is a NEMA 0183 feed from my DSC VHF. Would be great to be able to flip to the engine monitoring and fuel use screens too.

The Merc tech says the can bus plugs right in to that lavender plug. See part number 879981Txx (xx being the number of feet long the cable is) in the drawing above. This is exactly what Rick did and it worked perfectly. We shall see.

Right now I've got a generator to install, fluid changes, pink stuff, dry dock and a new Fisher cover to put on. Probably won't get this going until next season so it's gonna be a cliffhanger for all of us.

Ron,

As I recall the short cable came with my engine. Its just long enough to bridge the distance from the engine to the transom face.

I did hear back from Actisense. Their NGW-1 can be used to convert NMEA0183 from the Raymarine system to NMEA 2000. The only issue involves AIS (not even sure if the RL series even supports AIS), in that case you would need a NGW-1-AIS in addition. That would give you GPS data, as well as depth data on your new display without having to immediately install additional NMEA 2000 transducers.

Thanks Henry. That's good to know!

Forgot about this thread but as a follow up ...

I picked up the 740s and played with it in my kitchen for a few hours with the manual open. The internal antenna picked up the satellite signal quickly. I have not done the install yet.

Regarding the "virtual gauge" displays, you can set them up to replicate round analog gauges ONLY in single engine applications. Once you switch to dual engines (I think it goes up to 4 engines), it converts to bar graphs, probably to conserve space on the display.

You can also set up a screen of JUST databoxes - up to 6? (Mike said 6 in an earlier post). And you can have anything displayed in each of those boxes. Also, in the plotter screen, you can set up to 8 data boxes to display whatever you want in them. The plotter will also "do the math" for you and display MPG in one of those boxes if you so choose.

Another thread re-animation...

After a full season with the 740s I am thrilled with it. There's another thread somewhere on this board with the details of the installation so I won't bore you all with it. But I have a question about TRACKS.

I noticed that if you save a track, the track stays up on the screen at all times, UNLESS you go into the TRACKS screen and turn off all tracks. At that point, your vessel will not make a track during your next journey. I like to have a track for every trip I make and then if I want to get rid of it I erase it - If it's a track to a new destination, I may save it and name it. But, by doing this, I have to look at that track for all of eternity (or so it would seem).

The question is,

If I save a track and call it, say, "Tricky Anchorage," is there a way to remove that track from my screen without erasing it and without turning off my breadcrumbs??
