as in, the screen and data just stuck. No response to anything including the power button! I had to disconnect power for a few minutes to re-set it I guess:huh:. It really sucked because we decided to take a weekend off and stay on the boat. It was getting dark. The wind was strong and the current matched it. I was heading into a cove and the entrance has a very small deep channel. Just as I had 2' of water off to starboard the thing froze!!! I was trying to fight current and wind and drag the spotlight to guide with. Admiral insisted on staying on the hook at one specific location so I had no choice...lol Kinda sucks it happened, I haven't used it more than a few times since I bought it new and it let me down when I needed it most. My Ray Marine never did that to me!

The other strange thing is, while "sailing" in the wind on the hook the heading nor position numbers do not change but works fine while underway:huh: is this normal?

Garmin 740s with HD 18 radar and thru hull ducer nothing else connected to it and last year had no problems with it.

Any suggestions?

The only way a heading sensor will detect your heading while on the hook is if you have a heading sensor hooked up to the unit. Heading sensors are only needed when the boat has auto pilot but CAN be connected to determine heading as you state while on the hook. Of course you have to buy one and hook it up obviously. The reason it works while underway is GPS coordinates determine you direction of travel by triangulation from satellites and hence the icon on the screen will be oriented in the correct direction. Why it froze I have no idea.

I should have known that about the heading sensor as I installed a Furono SC 30 for that reason on the Mikelson. Thanks for the reply. She likes to stay in Rock House Creek just inside Ponce. We spent last night and still "hooked" in Matanzas. I guess I need to spend a little more money...lol

Rock House is a nice place to stay and where we used to go alot when we were in Daytona. Don't trust the charts in that area since it shoals all over the place and all charts and very inaccurate. Rock House in the no wake is plenty deep all over the place and you don't really have to worry until you past the No Wake sign near the island just east of Rock House Creek. At that point it gets shallow in areas.

IMO, heading sensor for the sake of only a heading while on the hook is a waste of money. Heading sensor IMO is only of real use if you have it connected to an auto pilot and not needed to just show orientation of boat on the hook.

I also notice it doesn't update position real time like the compass. We were already just north of disappearing island. I went in that cut by the the restaurants to get over to channel to go back south to RH Creek. I was following my last track in there when it froze.

I might as well install an AP, if I keep it much longer that is. I wish I could find a way to tow it behind the big boat, safely without tearing the crap out of it, to the Bahamas!

I should probably update mine too now that you mention it. I've not had it freeze up on me yet though. No heading sensor here either. The only time I see it get confused is when I have the radar overlay turned on and back out of my slip. The radar image always faces the direction of the bow but the heads up navigation mode turns the chart around. For $600-800 for a heading sensor, I can live without it.

Sorry to hear it froze up in you Donnie. It's always when you need it most too!

Made the 60 plus mile trip back to the boat ramp and all was well. It worked perfectly. I will check for updates and look forward to next trip. I will for sure change the mounting location. Might have to fiberglass a spot or some sort of custom pod.

Mine had been on and tracking for a couple hours. It froze as I was following a track. I'm still trying to get to checking the software. I'm still a little unsure if I need to take my laptop out and connect to unit directly:huh:

Guys, I won't call this a hijack - I'll call it "thread reanimation."

I have not purchased it yet, but there's been a substantial price rollback on this model. I played around with it for about an hour in demo mode at 2 different WM stores. I'm a big fan of Garmin. I don't have the need for any of the advanced features of the 741. Matter of fact, I don't even truly need another toy on the boat - I just don't like my current setup and I want everything mounted flush.

So, here's my questions....
1. anyone get it hooked up to the engines? There's a whole nother thread I'm involved in on this topic and I'm still a bit confused ---> GATEWAY If anyone is interested in getting engine data to the display, check out this thread.
2. anyone get it talking to the older nmea 0183 network (Tridata ST60+and Raymarine AP4000+)?
3. is there a way to change the presentation of engine data - in display mode it shows as a series of bar graphs. I'd prefer fake gauges or even data boxes. Bar graphs are sort of cool but it's hard to pinpoint the exact number.

This is the setup I'm running now...

The RL80c must stay as a radar display. It also provides a nice "zoomed out" view. The Garmin is plopped on the dash (no holes drilled), connected via cigarette lighter and gives me the zoomed in, detailed view. Very functional but sloppy. It has got to change. I downloaded and printed (in the correct scale) the template and here's where it would go. Just have to patch the 4 screw holes from the simulated-wood-grain plate...

Here's a pic of the "bar graph" appearance of the data. Read through the manual online and it doesn't seem that this appearance can be changed. Is there any way to make the data appear numerically, maybe in another screen? It just seems that you really can't determine exact RPM and exact fuel flow. Almost like having analog tachs. And what exactly is the fuel burn here? 38 l/hr? 35 l/hr?

Thanks!

Ron,

I'm pursuing info from Actisense on their NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2000 converter. I've posed the question asking if it will handle the NMEA output from a mfd allowing it to be ported to a nmea2000 network.

I have it talking NMEA 0183 to my fish finder, no issues there. Simple 2-wire hookup.

Henry...
Thanks for checking into that! I'm not so hung up on the 0183---> 2000 communications. This is not a particularly large display and there'd be a lot of screen toggling or a bunch of view-restricting data boxes would have to be set up from the 0183 components. I can still have the AP navigate to a waypoint using the big Raytheon display, and that display will show depth from the tridata. I should mention that I am not putting in a transducer. Tri-data will handle depth and water temp. I am not a fisherman so I don't care about sonar and fishfinding.

The new garmin is mainly for a better/faster plotter and engine data. My main concern right now is trying to find out where to plug in to on the engine. Sent you an email about what I found by tracing the wire marked TERMINATOR back to the main harness.
Thanks!

Yes Ron, you can display all types of data, including engine data in a simple block format. I quickly set this up to take a pic for you, as I don't use that display. It took a couple of minutes to set it up and that included learning where it was and how to set it. 6 is the max number of items you can display.

Looking back at mistercomputerman's post (#37) on the GATEWAY thread, I noticed someone scribbled (in pen, way down at the bottom) "YELLOW TERMINATOR." That seems to be exactly what I have dangling off the main engine harness at the aft (belt side) of each engine. Re-posting these pix here...

This plug has a yellow removable cap that says TERMINATOR. It traces back to the main engine harness, which is the large plug with light blue trim just to the left with the big white tag on it.

This is what the plug looks like with the yellow cap removed.

Thanks very much. I see it's in the NUMBERS section. That's just what I was looking for.
