Garmin 540s Reman $578 On Marinecloseout.com

Hey Jim
I'm rethinking the 540s and may like to stick with the 545s. I feel it's a better unit. (I looked side by side at WestMarine). I'm worried as well that it may be discontinued.

Any thoughts?

I bought a new in the box Garmin 545 @ BeachAudio.com for $866.

My pal @ West Marine said that was below his cost???

Have you received it yet? Also, just so you know, Jim "Admin" owns this site and also. BOE marine. I'd like to support him and this site as best I can.
That's a great price, though.

Get the 540 Todd. Mine works great. I just could not see forking over the extra bucks for more resolution. If you want to spend extra money get one of the 4xxxx or larger Garmins.

Use the left over change to buy Mo an early birthday present. There is nothing better for the boat than a happy admiral.

It's already installed and working perfectly. I did epoxy the transducer to the engine well floor so no holes had to be drilled for the sonar part.

Looks like BeachAudio is $892 shipped for the 545S w/o ducer. We sell it for $923 shipped. I would be happy to do $892 for you guys, plus we are an authorized Garmin dealer so there is no gray market stuff to worry about.

The 540S NOH units are sold out but more are coming this week.

Paul, thanks for the recommendation. That was my original thought, but I believe the extra detail and I believe it's a brighter screen will be important for our areas. I went to West Marine to view both and close up the definition is noticeable. We have so many reefs points and spits that will show up with the more detailed screen, and it is brighter. I will be mounting it to the starboard side of the helm I think, and when the canvas is down, that brighter screen will be nice.

Jim,
I'm in. Do I need a promo code or something?>

Anyone do any major analysis of GPS/fish finder units? I'm looking to replace my Ray Marine fish finder with a GPS/ fish finder unit that with show boat speed (my pressure speed gauge does not work, and this unit gave me my boat speed from an external transducer with a paddle wheel!), water depth, and water temperature.

How do the Garmin combo units compare with Lowrance, Northstar, Ray Marine and other popular brands for the price/quality/features in a 5 inch diagonal size display screen? I'm not looking for a monster size GPS, but do wear drug store glasses for close up reading! Are the Garmin 540 & 545 their best units? Are Garmin units the best bang for the buck? I'm not looking to spend my son's college fund!

Jim- I may be interested in the Garmin 545 too!!! Do you sell any Garmin 545 remanufactured units with the transducer? Maybe that's my best bet for the money? Can I re-use my Ray Marine external transducer?

Salty Dog, For what its worth, I am sold on the Garmin products. I have used Northstar, Ray Marine, and Standard Horizon but none of them was as user freindly as the Garmins. I have had the small screen Garmins and they can all give you the speed without any transducers hooked up. .......... Jim, Any thoughts on the new 5000 series with the touch screens? I just bought the 50footer and it needs a Garmin bad!

I have written all over the net about these new touchscreens. The Garmin 5212 on my boat is a year old now and has not had a hiccup. I am a huge fan of them. See if the new 15" 5215 will fit on your boat. They should be shipping very soon.

Well, I bought my 545s from Jim. Along with a through hull transducer.

I thought about the 540s. Price is lower, but my view was that the resolution of the 540 was simply unacceptable in a modern GPS unit costing over $500. In 2006, I started shopping and rejected all the garmins because of the resolution.

Don't regret my decision for a moment.

So you had the 545 and regret it? or you are happy with the resolution of the 545.
You said you "rejected all the Garmins" but bought one
If so why did you buy the 545.

It's confusing how you phrased it.
