Fuel Gauge and SmartCraft

I'm having a nagging problem with my fuel gauge, both analog and SmartCraft (they have always matched, so I know it's not the gauge itself). I have a 2007 240SD with 350 Mag. Last year, both indicators went dead. However the GPH and gallons used still worked, so I finished the summer always filling up after burning through 40-50 gallons (65 gallon tank). At the end of the season, I filled up just before pulling it out and the gauge went up to full. I attributed it to bad gas as I had been having concurrent performance issues, which have been since fixed (I hit 46 GPS MPH last weekend--better than new!), and the Sea Foam additive I used to store the boat.

So upon putting it in this year, I noticed I only had 76% in the tank. This dropped to 52% the next time I was out and 4% then 0% last weekend. I'm about half full based on usage.

Based on this, I'm guessing it's the float, as a bad ground would seem to be binary, on/off. Although maybe it's corrosion on a connection somewhere? I printed out the parts diagram from the online manual, and I'm going to try and play around with it a bit before bringing it into a mechanic since I'm in between jobs right now, but unfortunately I'm much better with spreadsheets than wrenches.

Any help to try things in order to avoid a service bill would be appreciated.

I think you are on the right track with a bad connection or sender. The analog gauge is a "dumb gauge" that reports whatever Smartcraft tells it so it will always be the same. GPH and Fuel Used Data comes from the ECM so the fuel level has no bearing on that calculation.

Some here have had good luck replacing fuel tank senders with Royce Senders.
