I would liketo replace the gasket for the small vent window on my 1997 400DA. It’s thelittle vent window that goes up and down at the bottom, middle of the windscreen. I’ve talked to both Sea Ray and Taylor Made with no results. I replacedthe outside windshield channel where the fasteners are with the new stylematerial. Replaced the old spongy looking stuff; no problem. The original vent gasket supplied by TaylorMade was a specialty item for Sea Ray windshields. I’ve been told they don’t makeor have in stock gasket material with a similar profile. Find that a littlehard to believe. Someone has bound to have replaced one of these things.Anybody got any ideas.

Taylor had one custom made for me when I replaced the vent gasket on my 380DA a few years ago. The price was ridiculous, something like $300 by the time they hit you with their "handling" charge but I had no choice.

On the 410DA

Taylor Made part # 8318970 (I think)

Taylor Made came up with this in 2011 for mine.

Can I ask what you used and where you found the windshield channel gasket?

I took a sample to them and had them make it, for $65 I had enough to do 3 boats. We use them for gaskets for commercial hvac equipment.

I called Taylor, they gave me a part # but said I had to go thru the dealer. ** wanted $9.20 a foot, I turned around and walked out without saying a word, IIRC I needed 27'. I also needed the gasket on the pivot point of the vent window, Taylor said it was no longer available...........hope this helps.

Use McMaster Carr P/N 8694k153 closed cell neoprene EPDM/SBR rubber for the windshield frame gasket. Same as OEM except has adhesive back. Use plenty of soapy water during install much easier to insert and adjust. The Part number above fits my 400DA windshields frame. 25 foot roll is $29; a fraction of what the OEM charges. Cut lengths 2 - 3 inches long and compress in the channel to compensate for shrinkage over time.

The Mcmaster Carr material looks like the way to go. Thanks

So I understand, do you mean 2 - 3" longer? I think that's what you mean.

Yes that's right, "longer". The original neoprene had shrunk and had gaps so I assume this will also shrink over time. I installed the product from McMaster last December and it still looks new. The adhesive back plays no roll but makes it harder to install; the soapy water fixes all that.

I took a peek at this and it more closely resembles "screw cover gasket" material which covers the screws at the bottom of the windshield rather than vent window gasket. Is that where you used it?

It seems just to be 1" thick by 1 1/4" wide foam with one side being self adhesive. Not really what it is made for but probably works okay in a pinch. You should be able to buy at your local hardware store though.

It is for the screw cover which I thought was one of the questions. hUMPH- this material is neoprene EPDM and not standard foam you would find at HD. It is, however the same material and size originally used by Sea Ray for the application. It is closed cell which is important to prevent absorption and to have a smooth outer finish and UV resistant. But whatever you want to use....

Thanks. I know where to look next time I replace it. I already got the dealer to get it from Taylor Made a couple of years ago, but, it was expensive.

Think I might get me some of this stuff. I'll call Taylor made today. Thanks :smt001

Just off thephone with Taylor Made; Man are they picky about selling direct to owners. Theydidn’t use to be. Guess they are really into the $25 handling fee thing.Anyway; the 8318970 in still a good part number for a “U shaped Gasket “.
They will notsell directly to me; have to go through a dealer, but they will send a free sample.Check before you buy and all that.
So that iswhere I am. Thanks all.

Sounds like they are protecting the Dealer network. But, it's good that they will send you the sample first. Hopefully, that is the right part for you.

Well, I purchased this and just tried to install it. The "foam" strip I removed looks like it's about a half inch thick. I figured it just shrunk and tried to stuff the 1" think gasket into the channel. It won't go in and just keeps expanding outside the channel. Half is in the channel and half is out.

I don't know if there was a difference in windshields between '97 and 2000. But, I don't see this working unless I'm missing something.

Taylor Madesent me some sort of channel filling stuff. Much, much bigger than what I needfor my little vent window. Next is thestick on gasket stuff. Hey; it’s got to be better than doing nothing.

Should be exactly the same as mine. First did you remove the paper backing and then use a copious amount of soapy water? The soapy water will allow it to easily go into the channel and move around and will prevent the adhesive from sticking to anything. It was a perfect fit and for mine took all of one hour to do it all.

It's not that it's sticking, the channel doesn't seem big enough for the 1.25" x 1" foam. The gasket in there now is 1" x .5" (roughly). I thought it just shrunk, but when I shove it in there is no way to keep it in the channel. It sticks out about a half inch.
